How to pull off long hair without looking like a hobo

It's time to put down the fine-tooth comb and hard gel.

Guys with stylish long hair // Images courtesy Style.com Dare we say it? It's time to put down the fine-tooth comb and hard gel. Grown out, natural-looking hair was one of the biggest trends to take shape on the Fall 2013 runways, and we're guessing even Don Draper would welcome the change. "For a long time now, the old school barber shop fade really dominated men's grooming, but men are starting to pull away from that streamlined hair style and are embracing a more natural, tousled look," says Garrett Bryant, a stylist at Arté Salon in New York City. And while some designers went to laughably great lengths (check out the cavemen-esque styles below from Rick Owens, Trussardi, and Junya Watanabe—see below), the styles at shows like Salvatore Ferragamo, Gucci, and John Varvatos all hit extremely wearable notes. "The best example is at the Gucci show. The hair is layered on the sides to keep the silhouette square and masculine, the top is left a bit longer, and the natural texture is embraced," says Bryant.

Get the Haircut:
Ask you hairstylist to layer the sides, leaving up to four inches of length (if you have great hair, go for more) with a little texturizing. Leave the same amount of length on top but ask the stylist to blend it.

How To Style It:
"There's a happy medium between a grungy shag and tresses that look blown out to perfection," says Bryant. "Texturizing sprays like Shu Uemura Liquid Fabric or grooming creams like Oribe Creme For Style are great for giving hair that slept-in look." Apply product when hair is damp, then run your fingers through it and let it dry naturally or use a blow dryer on low speed with medium heat.

Three examples of what not to do.

Disclaimer: If you don't have a decent head of hair, long locks can look more homeless than handsome. Stick with a close crop.

Yeah, my dancing hippy chick (I learned to dance decades ago) still digs my torso length, now white, full head of long hair. Underarm twirl, here she comes.
