Editor's Pick: The Tyler Jean from J Brand
Matthew Sebra, GQ Magazine
By now you've checked out GQ's Guide to Denim, right? Not so long ago, when the editors at GQ were compiling their lists of favorite pairs, I found myself without one of my own to contribute. Now, that's not to say I haven't had options to choose from. My closet, and local Housing Works, are basically graveyards of denim that didn't make the cut, the fault of fits that weren't quite right or fabric that claimed to be cotton but felt like steel wool. Whether I ran out of pairs to try, or time was on my side, I recently made the acquaintance of J Brand's newest fit, the Tyler, and am quite glad I did.
J Brand is calling the fit its "perfect slim" silhouette and while I've encountered numerous pairs before claiming the same these are the first to make good on that promise. Menswear's collective skinny jean hangover has left guys hungry for a trim, tapered leg but one that skims, not squeezes, our lower extremities. The Tyler does just that, clinging close in way that doesn't feel suffocating. The leg tapers to a 14 1/2 inch opening, which makes it ideal for pairing with dress shoes at the office and Converse for the weekends. Silhouette aside, the other big selling point to the Tyler is that it's crafted from 11 oz. selvedge denim. Still feeling as sturdy as the traditional selvedge options out there, the mid-weight fabric (as opposed to the usual 13 or 14 oz. options) renders this pair usable from the get-go - not after three months of aggressive wear. Having an all-season-appropriate option, that allows me to wear my usual dark denim uniform on the sunnier days of summer, is a welcome change from sweating through the rougher stuff. Finally, a pair that takes fit and function into consideration without any gimmicks. Next denim guide, I'm good to go.
