American Apparel ads banned for being 'sexually provocative'

Ads feature young girl in “overtly sexual” poses.

American ApparelA recent ad campaign from clothing brand American Apparel is creating controversy.

The Daily Mail reports that risqué photos of a young-looking girl with her breast exposed has been banned by the Advertising Standards Authority, who says that the model in the ads looks to be younger than the age of 16.

Multiple comments on the brand’s web site complained that the photos in the ads are  “unnecessarily sexual,” inappropriate to be seen by children and portray a young girl in “overtly sexual” poses, says the Daily Mail.

The ASA demanded the ads must not appear again, making this statement: 'We considered both poses were sexually provocative and concluded that the images were irresponsible and likely to cause widespread offence, because they were displayed on a website which could be viewed by, and was likely to have appeal to, children under 16 years of age.'

But the brand is standing to their ground, claiming the ads are “completely decent and were a fair representation of their product line.”

This certainly isn’t the first time American Apparel has created controversy, but what do you think of their latest batch of ads?

Its not that there are Sexy women in these ads.. sex had been used forever to sell products.. But what i find bad is that these are young girls, IF a person was found to have photos like this on their computer I am sure he/she would be arrested for having child porn in their possession.

and where are the 16 year old boys? they don't sell apparel to boys?. seems it's fine to always sexually advertise girls and women inappropiately but not boys and men. also these kind of ads are in no way giving the impression of fashion, it's more like a semi porn idea and to get the wrong kind of people to view them and the wrong messege sent to our young girls. if they want controversy do it in a classy way not like this it's appalling.

Yes. I find it offensive.  it is the over sexualitzation of minors.  Kids don't need to see what is really soft porn poses being passed off as "advertising"  people wonder why the youth of this world are going crazy and will prove unproductive persons?  pedeophiles are having a great day at your daughter's expense.

I think banning the ad was a good idea. Children do not need to be used in a sexual manner to sell clothing. Any adult, male or female, that wants to do it....go right ahead!!! I'm definitely not uptight and I do appreciate a beautiful woman and especially a sexy man, but not children. We have to have morales and standards at some point. I hope!

When morning talk shows and local newspapers dole out their seasonal swimsuit shopping advice, I’m usually pretty disappointed by the lack of body types represented. What about the women who don’t resemble fruit? (Or aren’t boy-shaped—the third “one of these things is not like the other” category I’ve never quite understood. Couldn’t they say “banana?” Or is that somehow more offensive than “apple” and “pear” shapes?)
