Israel announced this week that a new law has passed, banning all underweight models from walking the runway.

According to the Wall Street Journal, Israel's new law will ban models with a body-mass index of less than 18.5 from appearing in advertisements. That law will also require magazines and other publications to disclose when they use altered images of the models. The new law means that a female model who is 5 feet, 8 inches tall can weigh no less than 119 pounds.

Although other countries are addressing the issue of underweight models with laws like these, the United States may not be jumping on this bandwagon anytime soon, according to the Council of Fashion Designers of America, who says there are no plans in the works for a U.S. law that bans models under a certain weight. “We never had an approach of mandate or enforce,” said Steven Kolb, chief executive of the CFDA. “We create awareness and education.”

that's better than everyone looking at emaciated models and thinking that's great. maybe it's a step in the right direction to save some of our girls from anorexia/bulimia.

It's an awesome initiative!! Many people talk about it, but no one does anything!! This is a serious deal, many lives are in danger and this is an excellent way to do something about it rather than just talk and talk ... Go Israel!!

Not all ultra-thin women are that thin by choice.  I come from a family of thin women; at 5'9" and 112 lbs. and 5'7" and 108 lbs. respectively, my sister and I longed for more curvaceous figures our entire lives!  No matter what we did, ate, etc., we couldn't gain weight for anything.  Finally we each decided to give up the battle and just be as healthy as we can for our individual selves, which is what EVERYONE should be doing!!

it's about time someone acts on behalf of young women who are foolishly pushed into eating disorders to match other people's notion of beauty.

Fine.... let all the beautiful women that THEY deem to thin come to the USA.  The problem is not about these women being too thin/unhealthy, it's that the world is so full of lazy fat slobs that look at many models and think they are too thin.  In reality the fat women are 9/10 the ones that instead of getting off their fat butts, eat healthy and work out to at least be a respectable weight would rather stuff potato chips while they sit on the couch watching TV all day and insult women who actually work hard to look like they do.  So sick of people who would rather put laws into effect to try to make the average woman feel better about her lazy fat self.

Bottom line is FAT or the PC term used by many who don't want to be honest, "thick" is not attractive.  FAT is not only unhealthy but most FAT people smell bad because they can't even keep clean.  My point here is that those are the very ones that do most of the complaining when they waddle into a book store and see a magazine with a beautiful model on the cover and then complain. Super models are not where they are by simply not eating... it takes a very strict and healthy daily eating habits, lots of working out, tons of hard work and a certain look that stands out from the common woman.  Respect these women for what they do and stop being jealous.  If you find yourself looking at a model and getting mad, look in the mirror, get off the couch eat healthy and move your ****.  Chances are you will lose that attitude in a matter of time.
