Israel announced this week that a new law has passed, banning all underweight models from walking the runway.

According to the Wall Street Journal, Israel's new law will ban models with a body-mass index of less than 18.5 from appearing in advertisements. That law will also require magazines and other publications to disclose when they use altered images of the models. The new law means that a female model who is 5 feet, 8 inches tall can weigh no less than 119 pounds.

Although other countries are addressing the issue of underweight models with laws like these, the United States may not be jumping on this bandwagon anytime soon, according to the Council of Fashion Designers of America, who says there are no plans in the works for a U.S. law that bans models under a certain weight. “We never had an approach of mandate or enforce,” said Steven Kolb, chief executive of the CFDA. “We create awareness and education.”

The reason for the ban is that many models starve themselves to be thin, which is not healthy, and it sends a message to young girls that they will not be attractive unless they are very thin. So, the girls develop eating disorders and other illnesses from being undernourished.

Working to break free of the belief that you have to be extremely thin to look good is a good thing.  It also helps to keep models from being forced to be so skinny that it's unhealthy just to be allowed to model.  Unfortunately, I don't think this is going to make much difference overall.  A better approach might be to require diversity in modeling similar to requiring it in hiring practices of normal businesses.  Make it so they can use a thin model if they want, but they have to also use heavier models to balance.  They'd be in an uproar over that requirement, but it would help to show people that you don't have to wear a size 0 to be a model (in other words, you don't have to wear a size 0 to be pretty).  If we stopped being exposed to only skinny women all the time, it would be a major step away from the belief that only skinny people look good.  That would make a far greater impact than just limiting BMI for models.

If they are going to ban underweight people, they should ban overweight people as well.

Why don't they just ban Terrorists, too?
