Strange shoe accessories prevent slipping on ice

Nordic Grip Mini Ice Grippers are the ultimate winter accessory for women’s shoes.

Photo: Nordic GripSome of us refuse to give up our high heels, despite blustery weather and snowfall. But now, we needn’t worry about slipping on the ice—a British company is selling the ultimate winter accessory for shoe lovers.

The Nordic Grip Mini Ice Grippers are basically fancy rubber bands that slip over the toes of your shoes for a slip-free experience, no matter what kind of shoes you’re wearing (they stretch over all different types of shoes, from mile-high stilettos to boots).

”Party shoes and icy surfaces are a bad combination,” they say on their web site.Photo: Nordic Grip

“Nordic Grips' smart Mini is a discreet, small and cool grip which is perfect on your way to or from a party on icy ground. The grip comes in a practical box making it easy to store in a jacket pocket or in your handbag ready for those icy winter nights.”

Yaktrax work better--take the heels off, put on some flats (a simple pair of flats will tuck into your purse if it is big enough) with Yaktrax, and walk on the ice.  Change into your good shoes when you get inside.

Seriously--as much as you are paying for your heels, why ruin them out in the ice and snow?  That seems dumb, not to mention foolhardy.

Devices like this, and Yaxtrax, do work.  Unfortunately, walking on ice free surfaces with them is difficult, so one has to seek out icy surfaces while they are on your shoes-and it's awkward to remove them.  Someone needs to come up with a retractable device!

I absolutely would wear them, much nicer than crampons if they work.  Diane Kohn I don't know where you live but you can slip just as easy in "smart" shoes as "stupid".  Take it from me.  I slipped while wearing a good pair of tennis shoes with good tread and shattered my wrist so badly it took 2 surgeries and 8 months of physical therapy to get the use of my hand back.  Now I look like a little old lady when I walk across ice because I am so paranoid of taking another fall.

I'd much rather wear boots in the winter and carry the dressy shoes to put on once I get inside.  These "grippers" only provide a small area of slip protection, the rest of your shoe sole is still going to slip, especially the heel.  Be smart and don't wear stupid shoes in slippery conditions.

Absolutely I would wear these.  I never go out when it is icy outside.  I have osteoporosis and I am deathly afraid of falling.  I don't wear heels much at all anymore, so if these work on any shoe, I'm for anything that will help me walk safely in bad weather.

Or shoes that sprinkle salt as you walk.
