Bizarre Shoes Are Made From Dead Animals

By Kim Anne Oct 24, 2012 9:29PM

Taxidermy and fashion design, combined. Designer Iris Schieferstein is gaining attention (and controversy) for her line of shoes, but they’re definitely not your average stilettos. These shoes are crafted from dead animals, and they’re pretty outrageous.

Schieferstein, who gets the dead animals for her shoes from her own butcher, leaves the skin on and the fur still in place on the shoes, says the Daily Mail. Then, she hand-stitches the insoles and the lining.

The result is a variety of jaw-dropping styles that include a pair of shoes made from horse hooves, a pair of snakeskin stilettos featuring a pistol as the heel, and even a pair of sandals featuring stuffed doves.

"Creating the shoes is ugly work, taking the meat out is not nice, like any taxidermy," she says. But that doesn’t hold her back from designing them. In fact the artist made a custom pair for Lady Gaga last year.

'"When I began working with dead animals I would pick them up from the street.

"But they are protected by the government in Germany, and so after ten years they tried to put me in prison. Now I use my butcher." Now the question is, who in their right mind wants to walk around with animal hooves on their feet?

Tell us: What do you think of these crazy animal shoes?

Our favorite platinum blondes of all time

When Madonna posted an image of herself wearing a full on Game of Thrones Khaleesi costume on Instagram last week we weren’t exactly surprised—this is the woman who rolled into the Grammy Awards wearing a tuxedo and a grill earlier this winter, so why not celebrate the Jewish holiday of Purim with a leather corset and a pair of tiny dragons? Still, we were hypnotized by her white-blonde, braided Daenerys Targaryen hair. Functioning as a bleached out cultural weather vane of sorts, it tapped into multiple obsessions at once—the return of "Game of Thrones" to HBO, spring’s new extreme hair lengths and, most notably, fashion’s current platinum mania. Our own love of ice-blonde hair—which transforms any look from everyday to extraordinary—has been well documented of late, but last night’s Game of Thrones premiere sent our platinum fever into overdrive. In celebration of fashion’s favorite hair color, a look at the best platinum moments in history.
