Apparently, Mantyhose Are Totally Happening

Next time your favorite tights go missing, you might check out your guy's drawer, because if a new report is to be believed, "mantyhose"--yes, hosiery for dudes--is totally a thing right now.

The look hasn't exactly gone mainstream yet, but apparently enough men are interested in svelte-ifying and staying warm that demand has increased, and hosiery specialist Emilio Cavallini tells WWD that his recently-launched just for dudes line is doing pretty well. "A growing number of men have been buying tights at emiliocavallini.com since a unisex collection was introduced in June 2009, said Cavallini. Purchases by men account for 2 to 3 percent of the company’s annual production of one million tights," reports the paper.

So just how did "mantyhose" come to be a Cavallini specialty? "When we started our online shop we noticed that a lot of tights sized medium-large were being purchased by men.…So I did a search on the Internet and discovered there is a cult following for mantyhose...we came up with the concept of creating tights that both men and women could wear."

Basic black is their best seller, and he says most men wear them under pants for warmth, or with shorts to make a fashion statement. And of course, there are some wild patterns available for the more adventurous (check out the his-and-hers pairs from his site above).

We've already seen Spanx for dudes...and a real-life "bro"...and undershirts that second as shapewear...so are mantyhose just the next logical step? Or is this just a road you don't think men should go down? Would your guy ever wear a pair of tights? Don't you just love the name "mantyhose"? Discuss!

My first year in college was spent at ten thousand feet up on the side of a frigid volcano and when the snow came down, the sky dropped LOTS of cold snow. I had very cold buns and noticed some of the guys in the gym locker room wore some really warm looking heavy black tights. "Where you get those?" I asked. The guys were dance majors and after they told me what a dance belt was I took a quick exit but not before finding out where they bought their tights. I have since then carried three pair of heavy fabric black dancer's tights in my dresser drawer for under jean wear during winter months. They are vastly more comfortable than long johns and look better too. I cut the feet out at just below ankle level and the ends don't unravel. They just roll up about an inch and stay there. I'll always wear tights because they are the most sensible form of body armor against the cold of winter. No. I never tried a dance belt. The thought of perpetual wedgie does not appeal.  Basic black tights are ok but I'd never wear the decorative party hose featured by the dubiously male models in the ad. My tights will stay out of sight because they are personal and not a fashion statement of any kind. I will introduce my sons to this very sensible garment. I am a very masculine male and this garment has absolutely no effect to diminish my sense of masculinity.

Men have been wearing pantyhose/tights for years.  Aussie Lifeguards wear then to ward of Jellyfish stings; Viet Nam Vets wore them to keep the leeches off when wading the rice paddies; cold country men have been wearing them for decades under their clothes for warmth, and to sleep in in Winter for warmth; hunters wear them for warmth in Winter and to ward off chiggers in Summer.  Farmers wear them in Winter to do chores.  All of those previously listed are real men, not sissies or Gays.  The only persons who would balk at the idea are those not sure of their own sexual identity, real men don't care what others think, they will be safe from blood feeding critters and warm, and if you don't want to wear them then go freeze/scratch yourself.

Just clothing.  What's the dig deal?  Warmth, fashion, guys are human, and have legs too.  As a matter of fact I think that tights is yet ANOTHER article of clothing that men had first.

This has nothing to do with manhood, homosexuality, etc., etc.  Remember Economics 101?  Supply and demand.  I just wish a certain culture would invest in BELTS so I do not have to see their unsightly underwear..... and this generation is our future!   How much do you pay for bottled tap water or your Strbks coffee fix?

In the past professional football players wore panty hose to keep warm under their uniforms. . The use of support hose was very effective,  they helped to prevent swelling in the legs and ankles, improve veinous blood return, and were relatively inexpensive. .If a player sustained and injury the "panty hose" helped to reduce swelling by exherting pressure on the site.  So professtional athelites have understood for years, that hosery are not just a fashion statement. Graduated compression/pressure stockings help to prevent lower extremity swelling and sometimes blood clots. Blood clots can break loose and travel from the legs to other parts of the body such as the hear,t lungs and bralin and cause a pulmonary embolism, heart attack or stroke. Leaving the person permenantly diasable or they  kiledl them. Sosometimes fashion can have a positive health influence. It does not matter if it is a man or a woman. The benefits can be life saving. So gentlement don your pantyn hose, and play ball!

I cannot believe that so many people are angry over things like this.  Women fought and continue to fight over equality.  But, when is equal REALLY equal?  Does it end when women could wear pants?  Does it end when you are free to bed with anyone you choose?  Equality ONLY can happen when everyone in their various perspectives feel they are equal.  Since that can never truly never happen.  I say let men wear what they / we want.   Women do WHY CAN'T WE?  WE have the freedom to look and dress as we see fit.  Be it a sundress a gown a bathing suit or whatever, if you can, then equality means I can TOO.  One more point, someone mentioned a bra....   I know you have seen or know a man that could use a bra or something of the sorts.

Last but not least.  Men have been wearing the same tired "fashion" for hundreds of years.  ( pants and a shirt )  It is about time WE get choices too.

I started to wear black spandex tights for the first time in the winter two years ago under my suit. Suits are not really warm especially in the winter. It's amazing that tights for men might become or already have become a fashion. There is no doubt that tights are very comfortable and definitely more sexy than white cotton long johns. I'd feel like a grandpa with these on. Now that there is spandex tights there is no longer a reason for me to freeze in the winter and catch a cold. By the way, shiny spandex tights look quite good on me, but I never wore them for fashionable reasons with shorts. But the idea is not bad. Nice greetings from Germany. Frank.
