Cole Haan has chosen writer Maya Angelou to be featured in fall campaign
The 85-year-old poet is one of four contemporaries to represent the brand in honor of its 85-year history.
Writer Maya Angelou, 85, has been chosen as one of four notable contemporaries that will be featured in designer Cole Haan’s fall advertising campaign. Angelou, along with photographer Elliott Erwitt, astronaut Jim Lovell and model China Machado, who are all in their 80s, were tapped to be part of the campaign in celebration of the brand’s 85th anniversary.
Living style: Unconventional models
According to WWD, the print and digital campaign, called “Born in 1928,” features individual portraits of each. They are all vibrant examples of how timelessness and true style are born out of confidence — and that never expires,” said Cole Haan vice president of marketing Erin Riley. “They are as relevant today as they were in the past, and they all represent various perspectives that we thought would resonate with our consumer.”
During an August shoot, held at Pier 59 in New York City, photographer Daniel Jackson captured images of all four models in a series of individual portraits. Each personality sported a different style of customized shoes for the shoot. “It was a bit of a hoot,” said Riley of the mood on set.

The campaign will kick off on Sept. 3, with a black-and-white photo portion of the campaign on colehaan.com followed by the release of images on fashion magazine websites in September. Then, the campaign will launch in print magazines.
