J.Crew sells $1,000 shirt

Top comes with embellishments, crystals and a hefty price tag

By Kim Anne Aug 22, 2013 3:40PM

We’re always obsessed with each new collection at J.Crew, so it’s no surprise that we were pawing over the retailer's recently-launched style guide. It’s chock-full of adorable fall must-haves. But one item that will not be seen hanging in our closets this season is their Embellished Popover top, which is currently marked at $998. What! $998 for a short sleeve top seems a little excessive. Sure, it’s embellished and all, but it’s J.Crew.

Living style: 50 dream dresses we’d love to own

Before we got our undies too much in a bundle, we investigated the company’s website, which lists all the reasons why, in fact, this top is so insanely expensive. “Our in-house beading specialist's vision for the embellishment of this design required more than 35,000 crystals, sequins, beads and paillettes,” says the site. “Each one was carefully applied by hand, a meticulous process that took more than three days to complete. Finished with hand-sewn silk embroidery, it's truly a have-forever favorite.”

Tell us: Would you spend $1,000 on a top?

IF YOU WANT ONE OF THESE SHIRTS YOU MUST PAY THE PRICE FOR WORKMANSHIP, QUALITY, UNIQUENESS, PRIDE OF OWNERSHIP, STATUS, RARITY AND MAINLY J. CREW IS THE ONLY ONE WITH IT.

REMEMBER WHAT THE BOSS SAID ON TV....I'LL NEVER FORGET IT....CONTROL THE PRODUCT / CONTROL THE PRICE. I SEE NO DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THIS SHIRT AND A ROLEX WATCH. ERGO NO FOUL. IF YOU HAVE THE MONEY AND YOU WANT IT THEY'VE GOT IT!

I have been making these kinds of tops with all the beading and bridal lace for over 20 years for myself. I buy all the beads and fabrics at a warehouse . Each top runs me about a hundred to make but they are gorgeous. I hand sew everything. Turn inside out, wash on delicate. Never go out of style and people constantly ask me where I got them. So far I have made 30 of them. I try to make four a year for myself.

This just in, J. Crew is asking for a bailout due to it's workplace practices and $1000 shirts.

I generally like the clothes at J. Crew because they're pretty good quality and I don't have to break the bank to by my basics, but this shirt is ridiculous!  Who the Hell do they think they are?
