Bride steals $273K for extravagant wedding

Harpist? Check. Canapés? Check. 20 months in jail? Yup.

By Kristin Wong Jan 9, 2013 4:15PM

Kirsty Lane walked down the aisle and then into the pokey. In 2011, the then 30 year-old bride threw an over-the-top wedding using $272,986 stolen from her employer.

Lane was a financial administrator for home theater company Pure AV. She siphoned hundreds of thousands from her employer and plead guilty to 10 counts of fraud. Photo: Peter Byrne/PA WireLane was eventually sentenced to 20 months in jail. But after throwing a wedding that could rival The Royals', Lane was recently only required to repay her boss $28,633.

So what exactly was included in this quarter of a million dollar ceremony?

Lane used the stolen money to hire a harpist to greet guests at her wedding, and her bridesmaids were given jewel-encrusted iPods. An award-winning chef provided the reception catering, and, of course, there was an open bar.

Oh, right. We almost forgot about the magicians and fireworks display.

"I hope she has learnt her lesson," said Peter Sutton, company director of Pure AV. He told the Daily Mail that Lane's theft cost two employers their jobs and, eventually, cost the company a total of $481,740.

"It is very disappointing considering she has gained so much and had to pay back so little."

Lane made 122 payments to herself over the course of three years, but she was finally placed under suspicion when a customer asked about an invoice. Days after her wedding, Lane was put in jail.

OH MY GOSH!  She's 30?  She should pay the guy who would marry someone who is thirty and looks 50!  Gawd knows what she'll look like at 50.  Keep her in jail. She shouldn't pass on her dishonest and ugly genes.

Ahem..perhaps part of the cost of the 'over the top' nuptials was when she paid an attractive woman to woo her fiance and stand in for her at the wedding.  The reason she didn't mind going to jail after that was when he saw her in all her magnanimous glory on the wedding night the bridegroom ran away screaming!!

Judging by her looks, I'm guessing she used most of the money to pay some guy to actually marry her.

10 of the sexiest denim campaigns of all time

Have you ever noticed that denim ads are some of the sexiest? And most memorable? We can’t tell you how many of the people featured on our site, jeanstories.com, swoon as they reminisce about the first time they watched the 1985 Levis’s 501s “Laundrette” TV spot featuring the handsome Nick Kamen—who ended up , ahem, sans jeans. As for print ads, think Guess, Calvin Klein … not only sexy, but envelope-pushing and groundbreaking. If concerned mothers of America are writing angry letters to their local newspapers about the boob-baring models of your campaign, you, as a jeans brand, know you’ve done something right.

Fall shopping, decoded: How to get the most from every budget

Smart fall shopping can’t be boiled down to some set-in-stone lineup of items. It’s much more about how you play with what you’ve got rather than just racking up a bunch of new stuff; sometimes your bank account’s balance simply won’t allow for a full-on wardrobe refresh. That’s when it’s important to know what’s worth it—and what isn’t.

    Cool collective: Fall’s best products

Beauty editors are routinely asked to name three essentials they couldn’t live without on a desert island. So here’s our list: water, matches, protein bars. As much as we depend on beauty products, they’re not exactly essential to survival. These luxurious fragrances, nail polishes, and tools are no exception. They’re the anti-basics—hardly your medicine-cabinet staples. They won’t shrink pores or obliterate frizz, but they will make you weak with desire. And that’s a refreshing change of pace. Beyond just looking and feeling great, each of these cool new things appeals to our sense of style. How’s that for an SOS?

12 iconic beauties who make the case for the cat eye

Like red lipstick, cat eyes owe their timeless appeal to their spectacular, style-defining range that can, depending on application, telegraph Old Hollywood glamour, graphic minimalism, or counter-culture punk—what else do Siouxsie Sioux and Brigitte Bardot have in common? It’s impossible to think of Marilyn Monroe without those heavy-lidded bedroom eyes or Amy Winehouse sans her subversive, exaggerated swipe. A mere sweep of eye pencil transformed Anna Karina from a fresh-faced teenager into a French New Wave style icon, and Sophia Loren’s wide-eyed gaze has been forever etched into our collective memory with a frame of perfectly delineated black powder liner. Today, Alexa Chung gives the look a modern ease with a signature liquid swoosh that feels right whether she’s heading to brunch, the airport, or the red carpet. Here’s a look at the best feline eyes of all time. We feel certain that Choupette would approve.
