European Union bans animal testing on cosmetics

Animal testing no longer happening in Europe.

GK Hart/Vikki Hart/Getty ImagesAfter two decades of back-and-forth discussions on the testing of makeup on animals, the European Union has finally decided to take a stand.

According to PR Newswire, The European Union has made the decision to ban animal testing for cosmetics, permanently.

Beginning this March, the ban will include the import or sale of any cosmetics in Europe that have been tested on animals, both new and current products, and will affect all cosmetics, including toiletries from soap to toothbrushes.

“This decision…means that we need to step up our efforts in the development, validation and acceptance of alternative methods, as well as in the international recognition of these methods,” EU health commissioner Tonio Borg said in a letter to anti-animal testing campaigners.

"This great achievement in Europe is only the closure of one chapter,” said Paul McGreevy, International Values Director at The Body Shop. “The future of beauty must be cruelty free." The Body Shop was the first beauty company to take action on animal testing for cosmetics.
