Spring Shoes With Restraint

Feet that look imprisoned are just the thing

By Kathryn Wexler Apr 9, 2009 9:59PM

Belle by Sigerson Morrison, $265, at piperlime.com

Want to be on-trend this summer in the footwear department?

Forget the usual dribble about going boho, metallic or peeptoed. Start thinking confined spaces.

Shoe designers on the cutting edge have created a look this season that resembles a cage.

That's right, a cage.

Multiple straps straddle the arch and encase the sides of the foot. They can be flat or high, wedges or stilettos. Overall, they resemble some sort of isolation cell. Or maybe a
medieval torture machine.

And on the subject of torture, anyone have their home appraised lately? But we digress -- perhaps. Is there a coincidence here?

In any case, the question is whether these shoes, once affixed to the foot, ultimately make the wearer look assertive or aggrieved.

The best are busy, coupled with a strong heel, and have a certain heft and authority. The most sublime example of the genre that I've seen is by Yves Saint Laurent, part of their spring '09 collection. They're cage-like, yes, but with no suggestion of pain.

If you can't afford them, at a whopping $1,590, don't give up. Plenty of other purveyors are happy to entrap your credit card...err...feet, for much less.

No no no. Aren't attractive at all. I have feet that are triple a heels and double a fronts. And I am old!  Give me a plain t sandal and I'm happy. I just broke mine that I paid 4 dollars for in the 60's and went to replace them and almost had a heart attack. These were cheap for even my day but the same shoe is 49 bucks now and no way would I pay that for a couple of straps and a soul. My daughter is in her late 30's and boy does our taste clash. I am petite and she is tall and big. Of course we can't wear the same kind of shoes but bet she'd like these cause all her shoes are ugly.

The shoes are not cutting edge. 'Cutting edge,' what a cliched and over-used phrase. A beautiful girl looks good in almost anything. These shoes place the word 'almost' in my last sentence.

Please!! These shoes are very cute. Yes, I am a girl. It's not the shoe but the whole outfit. I have seen things that by themselves look not that great, but put them in a whole look and they turn out to be very cute. Pare these with the wrong duds and yes "Uuugly!!!" The right little summer dress and a purse to match and the men will be looking!! *Runs out the door to do some shoe shopping!*

No, I do not "want to be on-trend this summer in the footwear department".  Good old flip flops are perfect for me.  They cost less, are more practical, and look SO much better.  That cage trap ugly shoe would distract from my pedicure anyways...

Umm, this is a style you do NOT want to choose unless you have slender calves.  The way these straps cut off the leg at or just above the ankle is terribly unflattering to most of the population.  I guess maybe if you wore it with a long skirt, it might be ok but they're ugly too so why bother?

I'm with mango on this one -- the whole gladiator thing is just awful.  Yes, you can get them at DSW or some of the other big-box shoe places for about $49.00 or so but, the shoes are clunky and unfeminine.  Just to add insult to injury:  Men hate them!   They prefer to see us in girlie shoes.   :-)   I'll be glad when this trend is over.

I sort of like these sandals....maybe a little less strappy and pricey....when you wear construction boots all day these will let your feet breath.....

Kate Middleton is pregnant with her second child! A look back at her first pregnancy wardrobe

Ever since Kate Middleton transformed into Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, in her Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen wedding dress, the public has embraced her elegant sense of style and her ability to mix high street with haute couture. So it’s only fitting that her maternity looks always follow suit. Early in her pregnancy with Prince George, the Duchess favored muted jewel tones in amber, forest, and tan in mostly flared silhouettes, and as winter gave way to spring, she let loose her penchant for pastels and English designers. A printed Erdem dress showed off her changing physique while a polka-dot Topshop look proved she was having fun with her pregnancy. A staple throughout was the fascinator, which she wore on her last five public appearances. As the world awaits and speculates as to what Kate Middleton will wear—and what gender baby she’ll have—the second time around, we’ve compiled our favorite maternity looks from her first pregnancy.
