Four years ago--January 20, 2009 to be exact--the First Lady stepped onto the world's stage in a white one-shouldered gown by Jason Wu and catapulted the young designer to insta-fame. What followed was a trajectory any designer would envy, including a Target collection, a slew of celeb fans, a new bridge line, and the impressive company of other designers who have dressed first ladies, including Carolina Herrera and Oscar de la Renta.
Next week, the very same thing could happen for another up-and-comer, when Barack Obama is inaugurated for his second term and Michelle Obama graces us with yet another gorgeous gown. So, who will have the honor? WWD says, "East Wing staffers reportedly requested samples from numerous designers for Michelle Obama’s Inauguration clothes," and "some of those names allegedly in the running," are:
- Barbara Tfank
- Bibu Mohapatra
- Derek Lam
- Jason Wu
- Laura Smalls
- Michael Kors
- Naeem Khan
- Narciso Rodriguez
- Prabal Gurung
- Tory Burch
- Tracy Reese
- Zero + Maria Cornejo
A few weeks ago, I told the Boston Globe I have Prabal Gurung on my radar to be the one, so I'm glad to see him on this list. Are you gals looking forward to seeing what the First Lady will wear for the festivities? Who do you think deserves the honor? Discuss!

In a girl’s life, there are a select few occasions when it’s considered completely appropriate to go all out with a truly spectacular dress. Her wedding day comes to mind, of course, and maybe her Sweet 16. Prom night, however, is certainly at the tip-top of that short list of special events.
Now that April is underway, we’ve officially entered the fickle season of on-again, off-again rain showers, thus complicating the already painful task of getting out of bed in the morning and starting the day. As if it isn’t already hard enough to quickly put together a nice work outfit, the bipolar nature of spring weather demands a careful mix of lightweight, waterproof layers, as well as appropriate footwear. Realistically, no one wants to wear a pair of chunky rubber boots around all day, but the only other alternative is to lug around a variety of gym shoes, heels, and flats to meet all of the day’s needs.
