Four years ago--January 20, 2009 to be exact--the First Lady stepped onto the world's stage in a white one-shouldered gown by Jason Wu and catapulted the young designer to insta-fame. What followed was a trajectory any designer would envy, including a Target collection, a slew of celeb fans, a new bridge line, and the impressive company of other designers who have dressed first ladies, including Carolina Herrera and Oscar de la Renta.
Next week, the very same thing could happen for another up-and-comer, when Barack Obama is inaugurated for his second term and Michelle Obama graces us with yet another gorgeous gown. So, who will have the honor? WWD says, "East Wing staffers reportedly requested samples from numerous designers for Michelle Obama’s Inauguration clothes," and "some of those names allegedly in the running," are:
- Barbara Tfank
- Bibu Mohapatra
- Derek Lam
- Jason Wu
- Laura Smalls
- Michael Kors
- Naeem Khan
- Narciso Rodriguez
- Prabal Gurung
- Tory Burch
- Tracy Reese
- Zero + Maria Cornejo
A few weeks ago, I told the Boston Globe I have Prabal Gurung on my radar to be the one, so I'm glad to see him on this list. Are you gals looking forward to seeing what the First Lady will wear for the festivities? Who do you think deserves the honor? Discuss!

Even if everyone at school will be rocking their most festive shades of emerald on March 17, you don't want to end up looking like a Leprechaun in head-to-toe green.
How to dress your baby bump.
So, it hasn’t snowed in nearly a week—does that mean it’s summer yet? Well, almost. But alas, just because you’re confident setting aside your trusty Sorel boots unfortunately doesn’t mean you get to hop right into an itsy-bitsy-teenie-weenie yellow polka dot bikini just yet. Unless, of course, you’re headed somewhere tropical in the next few weeks (lucky you!) and really do need to stock up on sexy swimsuits right now.
Getting away from it all for a bit? Your vacation wardrobe should be just like your plans: laid-back but totally fabulous. Take a cue from these celebrities, whose low-effort, high-style outfit ideas are officially on our must-copy list.
These fun and flattering vintage-style suits blend the best of the old with the best of the new.
Although it's not officially spring yet—the best time to start shopping for warm-weather clothes is now, while stores still have a good selection. Waiting until it’s actually balmy enough to go bare-legged and short-sleeved leaves far too many factors to chance: what if your size sells out? Or the wrong color is left? And let’s not forget about gross makeup stains from 10 other people trying it on!
Sunglasses: it may seem counterintuitive to invest in a wintertime accessory traditionally viewed as a sunny, warm-weather item. But spring is on the way and we’re also currently being exposed to crazy amounts of UV rays—and then, of course, there’s the reflective snow situation.
One might think that Sarah Jessica Parker’s love affair with shoes started with her infamous Sex and the City character, Carrie Bradshaw, but not so explains Parker at the Tuesday preview of her new SJP collection with George Malkemus and Nordstrom.
Experts reveal the tricks to master the season's most wanted makeup trends
While New York Fashion Week’s Fall 2014 shows as a whole had a serious shortage of high heels, a number of major designers included impressively towering shoes amidst the abundance of flats. On the catwalk, Erin Fetherston’s dainty designs paired nicely with clear-sided pumps, while Marchesa featured intricate, strappy sandals. The season’s street style stars and front row celebrities proved that the craziest—and at times, most uncomfortable—high heels are far from dead. While we’ll happily slip into a beautiful pair of towering heels any day, we figured we could use a few tips from those in the fashion business who know the shoes best.
Gone are the days when sun-soakers had but one alternative, the revealing bikini, for sultry swimwear. While tankinis and mom-like one-pieces (you know the type…) unfortunately continue to maintain a strong beach- and pool-side presence, the one-pieces of today are taking sexy to whole new levels. If you’re still hesitant, we highly encourage you to rely on the slideshow above to change your mind. And when in doubt, remember the old adage that it’s always more alluring to leave a little something to the imagination.
