Biggest fashion trends of 2013 (plus five trends that we hope go away in 2013)
Love it: Wear all-day street-style
“People are busier than ever, and need clothing that can take them throughout their entire day. But it needs to be more than just your average yoga pants to make a statement. For an exciting statement, pull on a jumpsuit for your yoga class, and then style with heels and blazer for your meeting.” – Zoey Zimbicki, stylist for organic, active-wear company, Prancing Leopard
Love it: The short suit
The short suit – a tailored blazer paired with matching shorts – is a definite 2013 fashion must have. “I recommend purchasing a printed short suit. That way you could mix and match the pieces. You can pair the printed shorts with a silk blouse and solid blazer. Also you can pair the printed blazer with jeans or a solid colored trouser. It can be worn during the day, at night and at work.”— Sarine Berberian, designer for Sarine Marie
Love it: Ruffles
“Ruffles are back, but now modernized in streamlined non-frilly and supersized proportions in new vertical placements. Girlie is dead, but feminine lives on.” – Michelle Henley of FashionEdits.com, and industry insider for fashion retailers
Love it: Brands that give back
Brands will continue to create everyday items from food and shoes to clothes that give back. Take TOMS for example. The hip shoe wear company with a conscience pioneered the One for One movement in 2007 and their shoes and eyewear continue to grow in popularity.
Love it: Jeans
“Pearlescent and iridescent fabrics and lots of shiny and metallic textures and will be big in denim for 2013. While those treatments will add a little subtle glamour to denim, I also see distressing making a comeback for in the New Year.” – Daniella Clarke, founder and creator of Frankie B. Jeans
Love it: Lace
“Lace and crochet will be huge in 2013. They have been a big trend this past fall/winter season, but it will really be everywhere come spring. Colored lace, white lace, black lace – they'll all be big.” –Karen Kane of LA-based sportswear brand Karen Kane
Love it: The bowtie
“The bow tie has always been a staple for the dapper dandy, but in 2012 it boomed in pop culture and well as in street fashion. It has also transitioned into women's fashion as wells becoming a go-to accessories piece. Not only was it worn as neckwear. We started to see it in jewelry, hair accessories and even incorporated in the clothes. It will transcend in 2013, but with a more innovative, artistic tic and futurist approach.” – DeVario R. Hannah, DRH, Wardrobe Stylist
Love it: Plastic fantastic
Plastic is the new platinum and it’s going to rule the jewelry scene, says the editors at TrendNStylez.com. They predict that fashionistas and celebrities are going to flaunt plastic jewelry in an unprecedented manner. The plastic mania is going to be seen not just in earrings, hair jewelry or rings but in reworked necklaces, chains and more.
Love it: Emerald green
One of the biggest fashion trends in 2013 is rocking the infamous 'redhead-friendly' color, emerald green, says Adrienne and Stephanie Vendetti, sisters and founders of HowtobeaRedhead.com. “Pantone recently announced that emerald green is the 2013 Color of the Year and redheads everywhere should be rejoicing,” says the sisters.
Image and wardrobe consultant, Orene Kearne saw emerald green on many of the spring 2013 runways. From dresses (Dolce & Gabbana showed a white and green striped dress) to women's suits (Akris), expect to see this color in every type of clothing and accessory.
Leave it: Cropped tops
As much as we love Prada, Proenza Schouler and Missoni, please let’s leave the midriff-baring looks in 2012. Unless you have killer abs (think: Diane Kruger), this runway look can result in muffin-top madness (think: Kim Kardashian). It’s a fashion risk not worth taking. Trust us on this one.
