8 Tips For a Flawless Manicure

If you've ever left the nail salon only to discover your mani only lasted a few days before chipping, it's time that you take matters into your own hands (no pun intended). We caught up with Lisa Logan, the tip tech behind Beyonce's ever-glowing nails, to get the best advice on how to perfect your at-home mani. Grab a notebook and jot down these 8 tips.

Less is More

The key to any manicure whether it be with polish or gels is to start with clean nails and apply thin coats. Logan also advises to beware of peeling nails which will make your manicure chip faster.

Stay True to You

Previous Slide Christian Milian Next Slide

While it may be tempting to rock that sassy nail design you saw on Pinterest, make sure to consider your lifestyle when deciding on your manicure. "We're in a pivotal moment for nails right now, but everything is not for everybody," says Logan. "You cannot have long, pointy stiletto nails and you work in a corporate environment."

Don't Keep Polish on Forever

Previous Slide Tachina Arnold Next Slide

What is one of the biggest mistakes women make when it comes to the nails? "Keeping polish on forever," says Logan. If you're hanging on to last week's manicure, let it go. It's better to remove those leftover bits of polish and go with a quick-dry clear coat instead.

Remove It Right

Previous Slide Eva Marcille Next Slide

"When you do a manicure at home, make sure you do a good job of removing the polish because you want healthy nails," says Logan. When removing your polish at home, be sure to pamper your nails properly after removing polish. Polish remover with acetone is powerful enough to remove glitter, stones or other ornate designs. If you're only removing two coats of polish from your natural nails, choose non-acetone polish remover which is more gentle.

Short Nails Are Cool, Too

Previous Slide Aisha Tyler Next Slide

While longer nail shapes are making a comeback, a shorter, classic nail shape will never go out of style. "You can do any color you want even with a short natural nail. You don't have to go overboard with everything. Keep it nice and clean."

Experiment with Gels

Previous Slide Vanessa Williams Next Slide

If you're looking for a longer-lasting manicure, try an at-home gel manicure. Logan loves the Haute Polish at-home gel nail polish kit which includes everything you need to create beautiful gel nails at home. "The biggest complaint about nails is that most people can't have a perfect manicure that lasts more than two or three days. With gels, your manicure will last weeks so the price you pay for the products is worth it. Just make sure that you put them on and remove them properly," says Logan

Make Your Mani Fun

Previous Slide Lala Anthony Next Slide

If you have an adventurous spirit, experiment with nail art, colorblocking, or even glitter. "Girls love things that sparkle. It's okay to have fun as long as it's not gaudy," says Logan.

It's Okay To Bypass the DIY Approach

Previous Slide Jennifer Hudson Next Slide

If you've tried to master your mani at home with faltering results, Logan says it's no big deal. Call up your nail tech and have her pencil you back into her appointment book. "Sometimes it's okay to go to a salon and just get your nails done. Let someone pamper you," says Logan.
