Beauty Diaries at Every Age
20s, Margherita Maccapani Missoni
Globe-trotting accessories and swimwear designer, age 29
Missioni may hail from the land of pasta and glamour, but this young designer swears by a steady diet of fresh vegetables and adheres to a low-maintenance look.
DIET "I'm not a vegetarian, but I eat a lot of fruits and vegetables. I love fennel, cauliflower, tomatoes, zucchini, apricots, and strawberries." BREAKFAST: "Yogurt and honey in the morning with an orange, golden kiwi, or persimmons. I also make homemade juices with whatever fruit is in season. I rarely have coffee, but I drink loads of tea. I start with a pot of green tea at home and sip on herbal teas throughout the day at work." LUNCH: "I eat lunch at home almost every day. I have brown rice or wild rice with four or five vegetables, either steamed or roasted in the oven. I eat very few cow-milk-based products because I don't digest them well. I prefer sheep- milk-based products and goat cheese." DINNER: "I eat dinner out at restaurants a lot, and I usually have fish or meat. I also drink red wine three to four nights a week." DESSERTS: "I really like the homemade ice cream that my boyfriend makes me with goat milk and syrup, and I love dark chocolate." VITAMINS: "I take acidophilus and a seaweed supplement called Klamath Lake Blue-Green Algae from Algovit [www.algovitshop.com]; it's very rich in vitamins."
FITNESS "My favorite exercise is to swim at home in the summer when it's hot, but I do private Pilates sessions four days a week at Studio Pilates 34 [39-02-3360-0121] in Italy. There are three locations I go to, depending on my schedule."
SKIN CARE "I wash my face with SK-II Facial Treatment Cleanser [$70]. For daytime, I use La Mer the Eye Concentrate, Uriage Eau Thermale Toléderm Hydra-Soothing Cream [www.labo-uriage.com], and Institut Esthederm Paris No Sun Ultra High Protection Cream [www.esthederm.com] sunscreen. I remove my makeup at night with Bioderma Sensibio h30 Solution Micellaire [www.bioderma.com] and treat my skin with Bliss Triple Oxygen Instant Energizing Mask [$54] once a week."
MAKEUP "I don't wear much makeup during the day unless I have an event. I'm very specific about what I use. For evening, I like dark eyes or red lips. For my face, I apply By Terry Touch-Expert Advanced concealer brush [$44]. I like blushes from Clarins and Bobbi Brown, but I never wear foundation. L'Oréal has really good mascaras, and I use Yves Saint Laurent and Lancôme black eyeliners. My favorite red lipsticks are M.A.C. in Russian Red and ones from Nars and Tom Ford. I get manicures and pedicures once a month at a place called Violette in Milan [39-02-2951-9283]; I change polish colors with the seasons, but my go-to neutral is Essie in Potato Fields."
HAIR "I wash my hair every five or six days because the less I do, the less dirty it gets and the longer it grows without breaking. I use nonchemical shampoos and rich conditioners, and Phyto 9 Daily Ultra Nourishing Botanical Cream [$26]. Right now, I've been doing a lot of braiding. I've never colored my hair, but I have seen Valery Joseph [www.valeryjoseph.com] in New York for cuts."
BODY "I love taking hot baths and try to get massages twice a week at Bhoga in Milan [39-02-3983-1075]."
Margherita Maccapani Missoni's Must-Haves:
La Mer the Eye Concentrate, $165, Clarins Blush Prodige Illuminating Cheek Colour, $28, M.A.C. Lipstick in Russian Red, $14.50, Essie Nail Polish in Potato Fields, $8.
30s, Rachel Roy
Busy mother of two and fashion designer, age 38
This health-concious designer and devoted mom finds peace in pampering herself, making time for workouts, massages, and mani-pedis in the comfort of her stylish New York digs.
DIET "Last year, I became gluten free. The moment I cut out gluten, I lost that 4:00 P.M. urge for sugar and no longer had extreme highs and lows after eating a lot of gluten. But I love going to nice restaurants, so I adhere to the diet only in my house. I'm not a big dairy person; I drink rice milk, but I love hard cheese. If I really want red meat, I will order it at a restaurant. I never eat it at home. I also have a Kangen Water machine [www.kangen.net]; they're quite expensive, but for me it was worth the money." BREAKFAST: "Dr. Junger's Clean Nourish Daily shake [www.cleanprogram.com] mixed in my blender with rice or almond milk and almonds three times a week. If I'm really hungry, I'll add an avocado or strawberries too. The other days, I'll have egg whites and gluten-free toast with black-truffle olive oil. I drink coffee during the week, but I always have decaf unless I'm particularly tired." LUNCH: "A salad with beets, grilled chicken, sprouts, cucumbers, and avocado." DINNER: "I eat at restaurants usually four times a week. I love ABC Kitchen and Eataly, but when I'm home, I'll have chicken, brown rice, and vegetables or soup with gluten-free bread. I like lentil, chicken, and tomato soups. I love red wine, so I will have a glass every few nights." SNACKS: "I always have almonds with me--at the office, in the car, in my apartment--and I love dark chocolate." SUPPLEMENTS: "I try to take Whole Foods 365 Everyday Value Simple Digestive Formula [www.wholefoodsmarket.com] as consistently as possible. To boost my immune system, I like Nature's Way Sambucus Black Elderberry Original Lozenges [www.naturesway.com]."
FITNESS "I work out six times a week. I do yoga two to three days with an instructor at my house, and the other days I walk uphill or run on the treadmill for 30 minutes. I'll also get a private trainer from time to time."
SKIN CARE "I have gone to different dermatologists, though I'm not diligent about it. I love makeup and products, but I'm not great at taking care of my skin. I often don't even take off my makeup at night. I have really sensitive skin, so I can't experiment with a lot of moisturizers. During the day, I use Estée Lauder Time Zone Line and Wrinkle Reducing Lotion SPF 15 [$58]. It's light enough that I don't break out and it's heavy enough that my skin doesn't feel dry. At night, I use Estée Lauder Advanced Night Repair Synchronized Recovery Complex [$52]. I recently started getting facials at the Caudalíe Vinothérapie Spa at the Plaza hotel in New York [www.caudalie-usa.com] and now I plan on going once a month."
MAKEUP "I love makeup. If I do only one thing, I apply Estée Lauder TurboLash Mascara [$34] or false lashes. If I have time before work, I'll put on mascara and Nars Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Red Square. I also love nude and pink lipsticks from Tom Ford and Bobbi Brown, but I don't care for lip gloss at all. If I'm going out at night, I'll do a smoky eye--the messier, the better. The only time I wear foundation is when I'm at an event with cameras, and then I go with Bobbi Brown. I always apply my makeup myself unless I'm doing TV. I love getting manicures and pedicures done at home. Estée Lauder polishes last the longest for me. I keep my nails really short and round. I like my nail and toe color to match exactly, or else I wear nothing on my nails and pink on my toes."
HAIR "I wash my hair only once a week because it looks better with a bit of oil in it. Someone comes to my house to give me a head massage and then wash, dry, and style it for me. I don't color my hair, but I go to Ted Gibson [www.tedgibsonbeauty.com] in New York for cuts. My favorite hairstyle is a bun or a pulled-back ponytail. For the past year, I've been trying to grow out my hair so I can wear it with a natural wave. L'Oréal Paris Elnett Satin Hairspray [$14.99] is the only spray that's been able to hold my hair; I have one at home and one in my office."
BODY "After showering, I use the Body Deli Lavender Sorbet Oil [$22]. It's like lotion to the 10th power. My other go-to is Chanel No. 5 Body Lotion--it stays on longer than perfume, and I've never gotten more compliments in my life. It's one of those luxurious products that make you feel good. I'm a sucker for bubble bath and oils and bathe with Jo Malone Bath Oils [$65] every night."
Rachel Roy's Must-Haves:
Estee Lauder Nail Lacquer in Enchanted Garnet, $19, Ted Gibson Daily Cleanse shampoo, $20, Nars Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Red Square, $24, Chanel No. 5 Body Lotion, $50.
40's, L'Wren Scott
Jet-setter and celebrity-favorite fashion designer, age 44
Scott may be the queen of classic, body-hugging silhouettes, but that doesn't stop the six-foot-three former model from indulging in her go-to guilty pleasure: pepperoni pizza.
DIET "I eat three meals and drink three cups of coffee a day. My theory is that balance is key — nothing in excess. And I don't count calories! I try not to snack. I avoid butter, cream, and cheese, but my guilty pleasure is a massive pepperoni pizza. When I eat at restaurants, I prefer the antipaparazzi spots. In New York, I like Café Boulud, Per Se, and the Mark Restaurant. In London, I love a very small Japanese restaurant called Dinings. And for great French food and vegetables, I go to L'Arpège in Paris." BREAKFAST: "I eat granola and fruit or egg whites and toast if I need more energy." LUNCH: "I believe in stopping work and eating lunch. It's usually fish or chicken and as many vegetables as possible. I try to avoid fast food, and I like a cup of tea in the afternoon." DINNER: "Usually the same as lunch. But if I have been traveling, I eat pasta because it's good for sleeping. And I always have a carbohydrate like rice, potatoes, or pasta for a well-balanced meal. I'll also cook a few times each month because I like to eat at home when I'm not traveling. In New York, I order from FreshDirect. In France, I go to Rue du Bac and buy the freshest fish at the most famous fishmongers in Paris." SUPPLEMENTS: "I take a multivitamin, vitamin D, and omega-3 oils every day, and if I'm stressed or run- down, I bulk up on vitamin C and zinc."
FITNESS "I exercise five days a week at home. I do sit-ups, weights for my upper body, and various floor or mat exercises to keep fit. I enjoy playing sports like soccer, cricket, and tennis, and I also love to bike ride. I don't want to lose weight, so I do the StairMaster for only 20 minutes. And I don't like running; I'll do anything to avoid it."
SKIN CARE "Every morning and night, I wash my face with Dr. Brandt's Lineless Foaming Cleanser [$40]. I like it because it also removes my makeup. Depending on what climate I'm in, I'll put on Rodin Olio Lusso Luxury Face Oil [$140], Dr. Brandt Time Arrest Crème [$100], or Dr. Brandt Pores No More Anti-Aging Mattifying Lotion [$60]. I do the same thing in the evening, plus I use Colbert M.D. Nourish Eye Cream [$110]. I have a Clarisonic facial-cleansing brush [$195], but I use it only in the summer. I am obsessed with Caudalíe Beauty Elixir; I spray it on my face morning, noon, and night. For facials, I like the Face Place [www.faceplace.com] in Los Angeles and New York. I'm a patient of dermatologist David Colbert [www.nydermatologygroup.com] in New York City and see him for 45-minute Triad Facials four to six times a year. They're great."
MAKEUP "Some days I wear makeup to work, and other days I just put on my face cream, some mascara, and go. My rule is to always wear one item: lipstick, mascara, or tinted moisturizer. I wear Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer SPF 20 [$42], but if I'm going to an event, I'll put on La Mer the Treatment Fluid Foundation SPF 15 [$85] for a bit more coverage. I use Givenchy Mister Light Instant Light Corrective Pen [$33] under my eyes, and I love Laura Mercier's Loose Setting Powder [$34] because it's light and doesn't move the entire day. All of my lipsticks are by Lancôme. I am very fond of my Le Rouge L'Wren shade [$29] or any other color from makeup artist Aaron De Mey; he has such a good sense of color. I tend to go for nude or bordeaux for everyday. I also use Lancôme Le Crayon Khôl in Black Ebony [$24.50] to line my eyes. I wear Rodin Olio Lusso Lip Balm morning and night."
HAIR "I wash my hair once a week. I have dry hair so I don't believe in overwashing it. If it's dirty, I use Serge Normant Meta Revive Dry Shampoo [$25]. I'm also obsessed with his Meta Silk Shampoo [$24], Meta Velour Conditioner [$24], and Meta Sheer Dry Oil Finishing Spray. I go see Serge at his New York salon [www.sergenormantjohnfrieda.com] for haircuts. For color, I go to Gina Gilbert at Serge Normant or Christophe Robin in Paris [www.christophe-robin.com] to cover up my gray streak. I've had it since my 20s. My signature style for daytime is a chignon. I'm like a Victorian lady and wear my hair down only at night."
BODY "I like to take a bath at the end of the day to relax. My favorite body products are Avon Skin So Soft Original Bath Oil [$13] and Santa Maria Novella Cosmetic Body Oil [$78], which is heavy and divine. My patience level for massage is very limited, so I do only Thai massages but for stretching purposes."
L'Wren Scott's Must-Haves:
Serge Normant Meta Sheer Dry Oil Finishing Spray, $24, Rodin Olio Lusso Lip Balm, $28, Caudalíe Beauty Elixir, $16, Lancome L'Absolu Rouge Lipcolor in Absolute Rouge, $29.
50s, Kelly Klein
Beauty minimalist, author, and photographer, age 55
Although Klein has put her equestrian days behind her, she now credits leisurely bike rides, weekly massages, and a low-carb eating policy as the secrets to maintaining her toned figure in her sixth decade.
DIET "When I turned 40, my body started to change and I had to alter my eating habits and exercise routine to remain looking the way I did when I was younger. I try to avoid carbs — no white rice, white potatoes, or white bread — and if I do have anything, it's usually gluten free and in the morning." BREAKFAST: "Fruit--blueberries, blackberries, strawberries--and I have a banana every day for potassium. My one vice is a cup of coffee with whole milk. I don't think it is the best for you, but it makes me happy and gets me going for the day." LUNCH: "Usually a salad with grilled chicken, turkey, or shrimp on top, lots of vegetables, chickpeas, peas, edamame." DINNER: "I love fish; I eat way too much of it. At one point, I got mercury poisoning because I was eating fish every day and night for 10 years. Now I've gone back to eating meat like chicken and veal. I try to avoid tuna, but I still have fish most nights with a vegetable." BEVERAGES: "I haven't had soda in 20 years, and I'm a really big believer in drinking as much water as I can. Sometimes I will drink coconut water or hot water with lemon. As I've gotten older, I don't care as much for alcohol, but I'll have a glass of rosé with lunch in the summer." SNACKS: "Hummus with carrots and fruit throughout the day." DESSERTS: "I like chocolate — white, dark, any kind — or a little scoop of Graeter's [www.graeters.com] ice cream. It's delicious." VITAMINS: "I've read that vitamins aren't always healthy for you, so I don't take them."
FITNESS "Before I sold my horses, I used to ride for hours during the week, and that was a big part of my exercise. I definitely have to work out more often now. I like to take group Spinning classes or ride my bike in the country or through Central Park for at least an hour three times a week. I also work out with a private trainer three days a week at La Palestra gym [www.lapalestra.com] in New York. I've been going there for 15 years."
SKIN CARE "I see dermatologist Patricia Wexler once in a while, but I am very lucky to have been born with great skin. I don't get facials and I don't use many products. During the day, I wear La Roche-Posay Anthelios 60 Ultra Light Sunscreen Fluid [$29.50]. At night, I use Patricia Wexler M.D. Dermatology Universal Anti-Aging Cleanser [$16] and Estée Lauder Re-Nutriv Ultimate Lift Age-Correcting Serum."
MAKEUP "When you're in your 50s, a lot of makeup can age you. I'm a makeup minimalist. My skin looks better with a little color, but I don't need much makeup. I wear Estée Lauder mascara on my top lashes, La Mer the SPF 18 Fluid Tint [$70], and pale-pink lip glosses from Nars, Laura Mercier, and Dior. At night, I will apply a tiny amount of foundation from Dior or Yves Saint Laurent and smudge Nars gray eyeliner [$21] around my eyes. I like having nice-looking nails and toes, so I get manicures and pedicures every 10 days at Marie Robinson [www.marierobinsonsalon.com] or Rita Hazan [www.ritahazan.com]. Chanel nail polishes are my favorite; I prefer natural colors, since my skin is so dark."
HAIR "I used to wake up with sexy bed head, but my hair has changed and I don't get that anymore. I wash my hair at night with Kérastase Paris Bain Après-Soleil Shampoo and Lait Richesse Conditioner [$39], then use Moroccanoil Oil Treatment and Sally Hershberger Hyper Hydration Super Keratin Spray [$12] on my wet hair and go to sleep. When I wake up, it's perfect. I never brush my hair anymore either. I used to brush it like crazy in my 30s and it would fall out, so I stopped and it's much thicker and healthier now. If I want my hair blown out or curled, I go to Rita Hazan. My colorist is Marie Robinson. I see her for highlights around my face every three months."
BODY "I take a lot of baths with Epsom salts that contain magnesium, which helps me sleep. I pick them up at CVS. I try not to use overdrying bath soaps. The minute I get out of the tub, I moisturize with Artisana Organic Raw Coconut Oil [www.artisanafoods.com]. Massages are very important to me due to the wear and tear on my body from showing horses competitively. I have someone come to my home twice a week for a very strong deep-tissue massage."
Kelly Klein's Must-Haves:
Estee Lauder Re-Nutriv Ultimate Lift Age-Correcting Serum, $210, Kérastase Paris Bain Après-Soleil Shampoo, $36, Yves Saint Laurent Perfect Touch Radiant Brush Foundation, $55, Moroccanoil Oil Treatment, $41.
60s, Norma Kamali
Health-food devotee and fashion designer, age 66
A former makeup junkie, smoker, and coffee lover, Kamali has swapped her red lipstick and cappuccinos for organic lip balm, coconut water, and a body that could make a 25-year-old jealous.
DIET "I stopped eating red meat after moving to the meatpacking district in 1980, when blood was still flowing down the streets. I couldn't look at red meat after that. I've tried lots of different food techniques (raw organic, macrobiotic, vegetarian) to feel good and be healthy, but it wasn't until I eliminated processed foods from my diet two and a half years ago that I felt and looked better. With a non-processed food diet, your cravings pass, but you still have an enormous selection of foods to choose from. I eat whenever I'm hungry, and I eat all the things I love and never feel bloated or have a food hangover." BREAKFAST: "An avocado or a packet of Vital Choice cooked organic salmon with olive oil and sea salt." LUNCH: "I love a kale salad with a big pile of goji berries and sliced apples. Gazpacho is really delicious and you can drink it. If I go out for lunch, I usually go to Nobu Fifty Seven and have sashimi and a salad." DINNER: "I eat fish two to three times a week. I tend to eat everything for the day before 6:00 P.M. to keep digestion and sleep separate." SNACKS: "Kale chips, chia pudding, the Juice Press Ginger Fireball and Raw Organic Coconut Water juices [www.thejuicepressonline.com], almonds, green tea, and raw organic desserts like coconut mousse." VITAMINS: "I take megadoses of vitamin B3 because I had very low levels. I take 10,000 milligrams a day with my doctor's approval, along with calcium and Chinese herbs, depending on how I feel."
FITNESS "I've been going to Physique 57 [www.physique57.com] studio classes every single day for the past three years. I think they are one of the best exercises for really great results, both inside and out. When I went to my first class, I thought I would kill myself. It was really tough. After my first five classes, I felt and looked different."
SKIN CARE "My routine is simple. I'm a big proponent of olive oil; it's a part of my diet and my skin care. I use a product called Norma Kamali Olive Calcium Liniment [$48] to moisturize my skin and use my soap that's made out of pureed olive. It's a funky brown goopy soap called Olive Only Soap [$85]. I love it because it's simple and it's not created in a lab with all kinds of mystery things. I even brush my teeth with an olive-oil-based soap called Tooth Soap Cinnamon Liquid [$25]. I had heard about acupuncture face-lifts and now I go to Dr. Jingduan Yang [www.taoinstitute.com] every week. People see the difference in my neck and my face, and I think it's the total result of Dr. Yang working on all of my organs and circulation. It all comes together to create a better result."
MAKEUP "My makeup is pretty natural. I use Aveda Mosscara [$18], Hurraw! Tinted Cinnamon Lip Balm [$3.79], and a little under-eye concealer. That's it. I used to wear tons of pancake makeup, individual eyelashes, red lipstick, and red nail polish--the whole thing. But now if I keep my makeup and nail polish simple and natural, it's more flattering."
HAIR "This is my big dilemma. I'm trying to find a more natural coloring process. I torment Horst [Rechelbacher, founder of Aveda] about developing hair color that is chemical free. My colorist is Victoria Hunter at the Whittemore House Salon [212-242-8880]. Right now, my hair is the color I had growing up. My haircut is simple — bangs and straight hair. I just blow it dry."
BODY "I love Thai massages. One of the best I've had was at Amanyara Spa in Turks and Caicos. When I go on vacation, I have a massage every day, even twice a day if I can. They're so good for you."
Norma Kamali's Must-Haves:
The Juice Press Goji Curry Kale! chips, $12, Norma Kamali Olive Only Soap, $85, Butter London 3 Free Nail Lacquer in Teddy Girl, $14, New Harvest Olive Oil, $45.
