For The Mother of the Bride: Mommy Chicest
Fashion's current fascination with all things "ladylike" is a boon for a bride's mom. Garden-party gowns, fit-and-flare shapes, tea-length hems and a veritable bloom of floral prints translate to lots of perfectly pretty dress choices. These picks have just the right amount of polish and structure befitting the mother of the bride, but are still crisp and light enough for summertime vows. Look for lightweight silk, cotton blends, soft sateen and cool linen. Vibrant vintage florals or pastel watercolor prints liven up even the simplest sheath or shift dress shape, and while many summer dresses come sleeveless, it's not hard to find cap-sleeves or flutter sleeves for a smidge more coverage. (A nice lightweight cardigan, colorful silk wrap or tissue-weight cashmere scarf make perfect cover-ups for twilight nuptials.)
Moms may prefer footwear that's slightly more upscale than, say, a thong sandal. Slingback peep-toe pumps with a mid-heel height hit the perfect note, and a kitten-heel slide keeps feet cool, too. Small satin clutches are the purse du jour, tissues not included. And speaking of tears, choose waterproof or water-resistant cosmetics for ceremony staying power.
