15.  If you are the man, and you pay over $5K for an engagement ring, you are foolish.

 

16.  If you are the woman, and you have to have a $5K engagement ring to be happy, then two foolish people just became engaged.

 

17.  The engagement. the cost of the engagement ring, the cost of the wedding ring, or the cost of the wedding itself is not important.  Setting a precedent and propensity to overspend does not bode well for the long-term success of the marriage.  The ONLY thing that is important in the long run is the commitment to and quality of the marriage, and this requires clear understanding and agreement on important issues like money, children, and other wants and expectations.  It also requires the participants to accept each other as they are TODAY.  Nobody changes or "improves" after marriage.
