True love stories: Husband helps wife remember their love story

A real-life version of 'The Notebook'

By Kristin Wong Mar 8, 2013 4:47PM

It was Oct. 4, 1941, and a man named Jack Potter met a woman, Phyllis Clayson, at a wartime dance. He was an engineer for the British Army. After meeting Phyllis, he raced back home and wrote in his diary:

"Very nice evening. Danced with [a] very nice girl. Hope I meet her again."

Photo: Casey Gutteridge / SWNS.comHe did meet her again, and, according to the Daily Mail, the two married in 1943. Fast-forward 70 years and the two are still married. But at 93, Phyllis' memory is fading from dementia. Luckily, Jack has continued writing about her since the day they met, and he's now helping her to remember their love story by reading from the diary that he's been keeping for more than 70 years.

"I remember it like it was yesterday the first time I met her — she came up to me and asked me to dance," he told the Daily Mail. "She was an excellent dance partner and an older woman — I thought she was wonderful and I still do."

Jack called their romance "love at first sight."

"…everything fell into place. It was uncanny, really. I remember going home and scribbling down that I had met her in my diary. It sticks in my mind because I suppose it was a life-changing moment."

Jack wrote down the couple's stories, jokes and memories throughout their marriage. To this day, he continues to write.

" Whenever I turn up to see her she stretches her arms out to hug me — she is very affectionate despite being so unwell."

Jack and Phyllis just celebrated 70 years together this past weekend.

Their secret to a happy marriage?

"I just say, what will be will be. If it's going to happen it'll happen. We just get on with it."
