Paper refuses to print gay wedding announcement
After their announcement was rejected, the lesbian couple say they were discriminated against.
After declining to print the wedding announcement of a lesbian couple, a Texarkana, Texas, paper says it only publishes marriages “that are recognized by states in which it circulates.”

Michelle Cooks and Patricia Wrightner are a Texarkana couple who plan to marry in Mexico next weekend. They wanted to announce their union in the Texarkana Gazette but were turned down by the paper.

“They refused us because we are a gay couple,” Cooks told KSLA News 12.
The newspaper’s editor released a statement detailing the Gazette’s policy to only acknowledge engagements and weddings that are state-recognized.
“This policy have been in place for several years. Neither Texas nor Arkansas allows same-sex marriages or recognize same sex marriages from other states. If those laws change, this newspaper will re-examine its policy.”
