9 sex & dating myths

Our experts weigh in on what’s true and what’s not when it comes to your biggest dating dilemmas.
Glamour // Glamour

True or False? Opposites attract.

A couple joking around Next Slide

False.

“I have no idea how this could have gotten started,” says Wayne Anderson, Ph.D., a professor emeritus of psychology at the University of Missouri.

Video: Unspoken rules of a happy marriage

He says it’s rare to see a long-term relationship that’s been based on opposite personalities or preferences. We are more likely, he adds, to be attracted to “people like ourselves in terms of values and background.”

True or False? You can totally change him.

Previous Slide A woman annoyed and a man watching TV Next Slide

False.

Any personal growth—and change—has to be motivated by him, says Andrea Syrtash, dating and relationship expert and author of He's Just Not Your Type (And That's a Good Thing). “Trying to mold him into someone he's not or someone you want him to be is generally a recipe for resentment.

Bing: Can you change someone?

One of my basic relationship principles is that people want to be challenged—not changed. He wants to be challenged to become a better version of himself and who he ultimately wants to be, not the person you want him to be."

True or False? Women are attracted to different types of men at different points in time—and we’re talking week to week here.

True.

Ever fancied a Ryan Gosling type one week and then gone all Hugh Jackman the next? “Women are attracted to different types of men depending upon their menstrual cycle,” says Anderson.

True or False? It’s better to live together before you get married.

Previous Slide A woman and a man in the kitchen Next Slide

False(ish).

The value of cohabiting before tying the knot essentially boils down to who you are as individuals, says UCLA psychology professor Thomas Bradbury, Ph.D.

Bing: How a relationship changes when you live together

For example, he says, couples who don’t live together tend to be more religious than couples who do, and those kinds of differences, not whether you live together before marriage, are more indicative of relationship success.

True or False? Pheromones aren’t real.

Previous Slide A woman and man dancing in the kitchen Next Slide

False.

They’re totally a thing, and they help determine whom we’re attracted to, says Anderson.

Video: How to date on a tight budget

For example, he says, recent research has shown that women are more drawn to the smell of some men’s T-shirts after the guy has slept in them a few nights.

True or False? Marriage kills your sex life.

Previous Slide A woman and a man in bed Next Slide

False.

No way, says Bradbury. A study from 1994 shows married people have sex more often than singles and about the same amount as couples who live together.

True or False? Guys are intimidated by successful women.

Previous Slide A couple outside Next Slide

False.

“Big myth!” says Syrtash. “Most men I've interviewed cite intelligence and confidence as must-haves…. A confident man wants a confident woman. Just make sure you're not so confident that you come off as arrogant or judgmental—those are generally deal breakers for men and women.”

7 of 10 2A Images/Getty Images

True or False? A cool girl always keeps it all together in front of her guy.

Previous Slide A man comforting a sad woman Next Slide

False.

“Men want you to be self-assured and also want to know that they're needed, so if a woman never shows any vulnerability, he may find it hard to get close to her,” says Syrtash. “Nobody wants to date Ms. Perfect.”

8 of 10 Tom Morrison/Getty Images

True or False? You should wait until the third date to sleep with him.

Previous Slide A couple talking Next Slide

False.

“The average man reports that he knows pretty fast if he's into you and wants to have a relationship,” says Syrtash. “If he sleeps with you and doesn't call you again, chances are he was never going to follow up and pursue you. Men don't generally analyze these things the way we think they do. Very few men will think, I really like her and am into her; but she slept with me…so I guess it's over! And as for the ones who do, do you really want to date them?" Bottom line: Do what you’re comfortable with, when you’re comfortable with it.

Ok ladies here is the secret about men.  My wife did this about 22 years ago when we were dating and totally rocked my world - completely off its axes!!!!! I have never had any interest in women since (not that I did before - but over the years also never)

Every guy hassexual fantasies - even the straight laced bookkeeper who goes to church, takes care of his mom etc - every guy!

My wife had me list my sexual fantasies (no judging) - then over the course of two or so months she fullfilled everyone of them - some we did more than once but most of them once was all that I needed to live the fantasy.  We only had two rules - it was only her and I and no/stop meant stop.

It was 22 years ago and I still get "xxx" when I think about the things she did - for me!!!!!  One caveat - do it only with someone you love and they love you - otherwise he will just have stories to tell his buddies.

Marriage does not kill sex - the kids do. When they are young they are never out of the house - no way you can really get into it  - have to be quite etc almost being a teenager again but far worse because you would just die if your kids heard something.

Sense of humor, confidence, intelligence, good person are far more important than good looks.  The above attributes with average looks and in decent shape is killer. A hot chick and that is all she has got?  That may last a week or a month - given her probable attitude - she probably isn't much good in bed either.

One thing my dad told me about women when I was young that is absolutely true "crazy in the head great in bed" - this is not a rule it is an absolute - at least from my experience!

The "rule" about not sleeping with the guy until the third date was never because I thought he'd be scared off if I slept with him too soon, it was more because I figured if he bothered to go on three dates with me then he was probably interested in me as a person and not just as a one night stand. It also gave me time to decide if this was someone I was into. If you're okay with sleeping with a guy who doesn't call the next day, by all means screw him on the first date. If you at least wait until the third it might still happen, but it's much less likely.

It depends on how comfortable two people feel about each other. One of my dates

slept with me on first date that lasted fifteen years until illness took her. Our lifestyles were similar.

Xina, I am not sure what kind of experience you've had, but perhaps waiting is not true for everyone. I slept with mine on the first date, but we spent the whole day together, and here we are about to have a one year anniversary in February. Its about how the two of you feel about each other, and if you had a fun time on the date why be a poor sport? How much effort are you willing to put into the relationship?

I've been married sixteen years. Our sex life is very good. So,I don't know what that guy is carping about! My husband has Asperger's.Our problems are not typical. Our love life is hot, hot, hot. We're both almost 50.So,I do agree that kids slow it down. But we let our kid go to grandma's and stay over. Also,he sleeps soundly.Guess we're lucky.I almost never say no,unless I'm ill.And no,I won't do 3somes,or anything ridiculous.Just not anything I want.We both look at other people, but don't cheat.

Wow the third date....you don't even know the person by the 3rd date.  If you're not going to wait until marriage which you should. Then give it a year to really see the person's motivations..sex should never be the base of a long term relationship.  It also shows self-esteem issues given it up that easy...

Glamour Magazine is smoking dope.  After you are married sex dies a slow death. Period, no exceptions.  These experts this fantasy magazine want you to believe is questionable.  And using data YEARS old doesn't help.  You women who buy into this garbage are daydreaming.

By the way, the woman in the picture looks annoying with the way she is eating that donut. If I was that guy I would also be thinking about how unflattering that is. I would never eat like that in front of my boyfriend.

My guess, re: the pheromones Q, is whether or not you're a Bible believer or an evolutionist (for you polysci types, substitute "accept the writings of Varange" and "rationalist"), they may be real or perhaps not.  If you think Kansas is full of troglodytes, pheromones for human persons, are real; if your faith is based on nothing less than Scofield's notes and Scripture Press, only animals have pheromones.
Me, personally, I think most human just stink, period. : )  And, that's a good thing, Martha.
