5 weird reasons couples have divorced

Everyone has a breaking point, and divorce is usually a last resort for couples who can't get along. But some spouses have weird limits for where they draw the line in marriage.

From ugly pasts to erotic novels, here are five of the weirdest reasons couples have divorced.

‘Fifty Shades’ of divorce

Fifty Shades of Grey has reignited many sex lives, but for one couple, the erotic novel may have burned their marriage to the ground.

A woman, who recently filed for divorce, mentioned the best-selling novel in her divorce petition. Her solicitor, family law expert Amanda McAlister, revealed that the woman was tired of her husband resisting her advances. He blamed her lively libido on “Fifty Shades”, saying, "It's all because you have been reading that bloody book." Thus, she initiated the split.

"…it used to be the men who complained they weren't getting enough nookie in the bedroom," McAlister said.  "But now it's the women who are calling their husbands boring after reading books like 'Fifty Shades.'"

An ugly split

Jian Feng, a man from northern China, divorced his wife and then sued her for being ugly. Oddly enough, he won the $120,000 lawsuit.

Years ago, Feng fell madly in love with his beautiful wife, unaware of the plastic surgery in her past. The couple then gave birth to a baby girl, but Feng found his daughter to be — how shall we put this — aesthetically unpleasant.

"Our daughter was incredibly ugly, to the point where it horrified me," Feng told The Irish Times.

At first, Feng thought he'd been cuckolded, but he soon discovered his wife's ugly little secret: $100,000 in plastic surgery procedures. He divorced and sued her, claiming she married him under false pretences.

Elderly infidelity

You'd think after seven decades of marriage, you'd be immune to divorce. You'd be wrong. Last year, a nearly century-old man became one half of the oldest divorced couple in the world.

In 2011, a 90-year-old man named Antonio discovered that his 96-year-old wife, Rosa, had cheated on him in the 1940s. Forgive and forget? Think again. For Antonio, infidelity did not have an expiration date. He decided to divorce his wife after they'd been married for a whopping 77 years.

An extra painful breakup

Grigory Toporov wanted to make his wife happy, so he underwent a procedure to extend the length of his penis. All was well in Grigory's marriage until a wild sex session went terribly wrong.

While making love to his wife, Grigory's penis extension snapped off, much to the chagrin of both Grigory and his other half.  That was the straw that broke the camel's back, so to speak.

"I told her I would get a new one but she wasn't having any of it. She said she was fed up with my failures in bed and wants a divorce," Grigory said.

Curiosity killed the marriage

Previous Slide Woman's face covered Next Slide

After 30 years of marriage, some wives may complain that their husbands never even look at them. But for one couple, it was the exact opposite that caused their divorce.

A 50-year-old woman from Saudi Arabia followed a tradition that kept her face hidden at all times. Not even her husband could catch a glimpse of her. Ever.

One night, curiosity got the best of him, and the husband attempted to lift his wife's veil to see the face he'd been married to for the past three decades. Bad move.

The woman woke up, outraged, and then demanded a divorce. She told Saudi newspaper Al-Riyadh:

"After all these years, he tries to commit such a big mistake."

How about, she hid the fact that she really wanted to be a nun, and only got married to have kids, and never wanted sex after that.

Meh, marriage is overrated. It's just a slip of paper. If you really love someone, you shouldn't need the validation of the government.

More stupidity

Stupid reasons for divorce? How about an article about why some people can't afford to get married in the first place anymore?  Like health or other insurance costs and fees going up if they did.  As bad or lame as divorce reasons can be, so can be the reasons people don't get married in the first place?
