8 Words That Give a Liar Away

Odds are, you and your guy have a great relationship, and the only lies he tells are little fibs. But it's good to know how to spot the signs he could be telling a whopper. Lie detection expert Janine Driver, author of the new book, You Can't Lie to Me, fills us in on the words that give away a liar.
Cosmopolitan // Cosmopolitan

'Left'

8 words that give a liar away left Next Slide

When he uses this word (think: "I left the bar at six" vs. "I went home at six"), there's some kind of drama involved. Maybe he got stuck in traffic or is hiding something he did that he shouldn't have.

'Never'

Previous Slide 8 words that give a liar away never Next Slide

The big thing to look out for is when he says "never" when "no" will do. It's a sign he's overcompensating. For example, if you ask, "Did you just look at that girl's butt?" and he says, "Never!"

'That'

Previous Slide 8 words that give a liar away that Next Slide

Like never, it depends on how he uses it. If he puts "that" in front of a noun, like "that woman" or "that money," it's a subconscious attempt for him to distance himself from the word. This is a common trick of manipulators.

'Would'

Previous Slide 8 words that give a liar away would Next Slide

If he skips "no" and goes straight to "I would never do something like that!" when talking about a past event, be wary. For example, "Are you still talking to your ex?" "I would never do that to you!" "Would never" suggests that he plans to do it in the future.

'Yes, ma'am'

Previous Slide 8 words that give a liar away Yes, ma'am Next Slide

If your guy is a Southern gentleman, then this doesn't apply. But if he suddenly says "ma'am" to you out of nowhere, be cautious. It's a sign that he's feeling stressed and knows he's in trouble.

'By the way ...'

Previous Slide 8 words that give a liar away by the way Next Slide

Liars use phrases like this to try to minimize what they say next -- but usually it's what's most important to the story. Pay extra attention to what he says afterward.

'But'

Previous Slide 8 words that give a liar away but Next Slide

Liars usually try to downplay what they say with this word, so pay attention when he says something like, "I know this is going to sound strange, but ..." or "I know you think I'm lying, but ..."

'Why would I do that?'

Previous Slide 8 words that give a liar away why would I do that Next Slide

It's a favorite stalling line of liars, so they can buy a little time to work out what to say next. These phrases also fit the bill: "What kind of person do you think I am?", "Are you calling me a liar?", and "I knew this was going to happen to me!"

Cosmopolitan should stick to making shy girls feisty in bed. This kind of fear mongering is ridiculous and will ruin your relationship when you go calling your man a liar based on phrases of speech. Trust me, the type of girl who reads too far into such things and starts reading too far into the words I use won't last a month with me, and I'm very honest. Find better ways to know if someone is sincere and don't ruin a good thing when you have it.

I'm not sure why I read this. I can tell you that the author uses a great deal of assumption. Different people use words and phrases differently. The differences come from varied levels of education, upbringing, friends, locality, and a lot more. Whoever wrote this trash is putting good relationships at risk if anyone takes any of it seriously.

Most of this is crap. Ladies I hope you do not take this too seriously. I do not know where they got these from, but it is probably from some lady, and she is probably single and ostensibly trying to fcuk up your relationship because men are douchebags . . . just a guess.

This is called stereotyping. This is a opinion which should be address as one. No wonder society is falling apart. This writer needs to have facts. Sounds like someone broke there heart and so they want to ruin others relationships. Shame on them! Just because some people use these words or phases does not mean they are lying. The writer just lied by saying so.

When my husband says "Yes, maam" , he is not lying. He is being sarcastic to let me know he thinks I am being too controlling.  Just shorthand.  And it works.

Dear Cosmo:

Can you post a list of words I'm allowed to use and not be a liar?

No wonder women and men don't understand each other, with garbage like this floating around.

I read this thinking some of this would be true. Only thing THAT is a lie is the article.

Could tell this article was written by a woman with a whole lot of presumptions. I feel sorry for any guy in a relationship with this woman. My presumption is she gets dumped alot because she tries to read too much into everything I guy says.

If THAT were true every time a man spoke he WOULD be lying about THAT monery THAT woman and THAT. This is so off base and subjective whims of an author who evidently is fresh off of a sour relationship with a man.

I can tell by this article that the author is self centered and believes any common use of proper sentence structure is like lying.  But, if I look at a woman's butt and I say cute my wife is self confident enough not to question my intentions.  This author is apparently a sleeze who feels lucky to have a partner and is intent on running the partner off.

Typical female ASSUMPTIONS disguised as scientific facts. Make her rich folks. How about a book on how to tell when a woman is lying? Probably because it would be too difficult to write the thing, too many secrets given away and it would be three times as thick as War and Peace...

Unbelieveable BULLSH*t,  who is the source of this information? Who did the research?   This column is an uneducated stab in the dark.

Don't believe it, it is only ripping common phrases and words and calling all men liars.

Hands down the worst piece of trash I have ever read and there is no close second. MSN always has great stories, but this is an exception.

The author probably thinks I am lying with this comment because she is that terrible.

I have 'never" been to the moon and "that" is the truth; "but", I "would" like to go there if I could. "By the way", I suppose every word I just wrote, and will write, here is a lie by this professed "expert". Just exactly how does one become a Lie Detection Expert Janine Driver? Since I have been qualified as an expert many times in my field, I was just wondering, one expert to another? What a bunch of crap and complete BS! The true experts will tell you that you can tell by body language, that does work.

Wow really? Who was the male hating person that wrote this, misinformed, male bashing, feminist article? I use most of those phrases and am known by those that know me as the most bluntly honest person they know. Many, saying I am blunt to a fault. Women don't listen to this yahoo. words. She is obviously someone looking to destroy men. Here is what words are:

"Words are not things. They are counters, valuable, but clumsy and crude. Once we get beyond counting potatoes and giving street directions, their limitations become apparent. At worst, they cannot help but lie; at best, they serve as evidence of what can never be seen." ~Dr. John Frederick Lange Jr. Ph.D.

Utter crap. Any woman who is looking for some sort of "leverage" of this nature is already doing something to destroy the relationship...

Shes projecting her own guilt onto the man in order to assume the role of victim.

And a woman who does this is probably already having sex with someone else and merely looking for any excuse...

What a bunch of crap.  I was quite the player in my day, juggling 4 or 5 women at a time and was not always truthful in order to do it.  Some of them didn't care and knew, some didn't.  But I never used the lame language this article purports to expose.  I could lie looking someone straight in the eye.  Its conviction and bald face sincerity that carries a good lie.  Anyone using these dumb qualifiers and whishy washy language  deserves to be caught.

Every man I've had a relationship with, including an ex-husband, has used all of these phrases during our time together to cover up cheating, disinterest or to string me along; so they are absolutely right on.  I can add a couple more:  If he starts a sentence with "I'm not trying to be funny (or hurtful) but......." means you are about to be accused of something, usually the reason for his misbehavior.  A date that ends with an "I'll call you" means you will never hear from him again.  If he has an interest in you, he will not let you part for the evening without making some plan for a future date.

well I don't know about that. Now I kicked my lying, cheating, loser of a fiancé, so lets see.
He swore up and down and said, "I don't care what THAT lying whore says, I NEVER touched her." the truth was he was doing her for 2 1/2 years.

He said " I WOULD NEVER do THAT to you" **** he was already doing it!! I just didn't know it and I believed his lies.

"BY THE WAY I wasn't going to ask you this BUT I really need to borrow 3 grand and you know I will pay you back"  ( I am not stupid to give my hard earned $$$  to any guy pfttt) he knew he was getting the boot soon, so he was going to screw me over and con me out of some money before I ended the relationship.

"Are you calling me a liar?"this is right after I caught him in another lie and he was denying it, as soon as I showed proof he changed his story again.

He also said 'Why would I do that?' and risk what we have? (he already did) I never went to her house (he did many times to give her some loving when her husband was away)
She NEVER came over! boy she did, and she did more than just coming over, many times!!
these fits my lying cheat, low life ex- fiancé perfectly!!in every way LOL!!

I believe what the author says is true in this manner: that these words and phrases are often used by liars. However, using them does not imply lying. Overreacting to this article could also be a sign someone is hiding something :D

A lot of liars sit around and try to come up with ways to make others look like liars. Sometime they borrow lines from famous people that are caught lying and deduce that anyone using THAT line is a liar. Then they might apply a rhetorical circumstance like asking a male subject "did you look at that womans behind". But. (oops I used one of those liar identification word) the surest way to spot a liar is they will write down ways in which they believe others lie as sort of a playbook. They project the act of lying onto others as if they are the offenders when in reality they are really lying to themselves.
