Maintain positive interactions
Being fun, positive and happy in a relationship also proved to be important. Researcher Brian Ogolsky said:
"Even a small attempt at maintenance, such as asking how your partner's day was, sending a humorous text to make him laugh or picking up the phone and calling your mother- or father-in-law can have a positive impact on your relationship and make you happier."
Offer assurances
Have you told her lately that you love her?
After years of being together, you may think that assurance is unnecessary and that your feelings for your partner are understood. But that assumption is precisely why relationship maintenance is necessary.
Ogolsky explained that it's important to assure your significant other "that you're in the relationship for the long haul."
Share the load
When one person carries the bulk of the day-to-day responsibilities, anger and resentment can easily fester.
Thus, divvying up duties is never a bad idea. Ogolsky found that couples who split "household chores and responsibilities equally" were more satisfied in their relationships.
Share a network of friends
Couples who play together definitely stay together. The researchers stressed the importance of sharing a network of friends and family. It might behoove your love life to snuggle up to your in-laws.
Overall, Ogolsky said of the study's findings:
"Relationships are like cars in that you have do certain things to keep them running, especially when your goal is to strengthen and preserve your bond with your partner."
