How Do You Tell Someone They're Special?

Although it may seem hard to believe, Valentine’s Day is not a celebration invented by florists or chocolate makers. In fact, the two original St. Valentines for whom the day is named were Christian martyrs. It took the poet Geoffrey Chaucer, back in 1382, to declare that St. Valentine’s Day was a special day for love: he was marking the engagement of England’s teenage king, Richard II, to the equally young Anne of Bohemia.

Today, just about everybody celebrates Valentine’s Day, from schoolchildren to the long-married, but we all have one goal: to let people know how much they mean to us. And there are a number of ways to do that.

If you look at advertising that appears right before Valentine’s Day, you might be fooled into thinking that spending money is required, and the more money spent, the better. Jewelry stores, florists, lingerie and cologne manufacturers—even fast food restaurants—all offer suggestions for ways to tell people how you feel. But often, the most memorable valentines don’t cost much at all.

When I was in elementary school, we gave valentines to everyone in our class, and we made special valentines for parents and grandparents. Those small candy hearts with romantic sayings were popular and they didn’t cost much, which made them easy to share. Which we did, and it was fun.

My school experience taught me a valuable lesson:  you don’t have to be in love to celebrate Valentine’s Day.  It’s simply a great reason to remember the people who are important to you, whether that’s a spouse, a friend, or even a favorite barista. Everybody likes to be remembered, and Valentine’s Day is the perfect day to do it.

So whether you have a sweetie—or you just know people who are sweet—take this opportunity to tell those special people just how special they are.

What’s your favorite way to tell someone how much they mean to you? Share your Valentine’s Day ideas with us on Facebook, and you could be one of three lucky winners of a very sweet treat: a Godiva gift basket. Perfect for sharing with someone special.
