20 things everyone should do at least once

So much of what we do in our lives is routine or reactive, not deliberate. Here are 20 things we think everyone should do at least once. What would you add?
Freelance // Freelance

Own your own business

Being your own boss is something that everyone should experience Next Slide

Find out if you have what it takes to be your own boss. Whether you’re founding the world’s next mega-corporation, opening the shop around the corner or just freelancing from your home office, you deserve to experience the freedom and frustration of working for yourself.

Live in a foreign country

Previous Slide Live in another country Next Slide

Immerse yourself in different culture by taking up residence in another country for as long as your savings and the rest of your life plan will allow. Most countries will issue 60- or 90-day visas on request, and many cities offer short-term rentals at rates that beat vacation prices. There is a world of difference between being a tourist and being an expat. Go and find out.

Buy a home

Previous Slide Buy your own home Next Slide

Who doesn’t dream of owning their own home? The recession and widespread foreclosures over the past few years may have tarnished the dream a bit, but it’s still alive and well for most people. Renting may offer more flexibility and variety, but there’s nothing quite like having a place of your own.

Drive coast to coast

Previous Slide Drive cross country Next Slide

At least once in your life, take the ultimate road trip. Drive all the way across the country and return by a different route. The scenery, and the experience, will be unforgettable.

Get your heart broken

Previous Slide Fall in love and get your heart broken Next Slide

No one goes looking for heartbreak, but emotional pain is an inevitable part of life and often a prerequisite for developing compassion and empathy, and for recognizing and appreciating true love when you find it.

Be cheered by a crowd

Previous Slide Be cheered by a crowed Next Slide

Do something cheer-worthy, whether you’re scoring the winning touchdown, taking a bow after your successful theater debut or delivering a rousing speech—and then bask in the crowd’s loud vocal approval and applause.

Keep a journal

Previous Slide Keep a journal of the things going on in your life so you can reflect Next Slide

At some point in your life, follow the example of successful people ranging from presidents and prime ministers to artists and authors by keeping a written record of your daily thoughts, insights and observations.

Take a leap of faith

Previous Slide Take a leap of faith Next Slide

It’s nice to have all the facts and a clear and irrefutable choice, but life doesn’t always work that way. Sometimes, you have to just trust your instincts, take a leap of faith, and see where you land. Chances are you’ll end up in a place far more interesting than where logic alone would have led you.

Give something back

Previous Slide Donate time and energy Next Slide

Life has been good to you, so use some of your time, talent and hard-earned money to help those less fortunate. You’ll not only improve the lives of the people you touch directly, you’ll also enrich your community and yourself.

Design and build a house

Previous Slide Build your 'dream home' Next Slide

Stop trying to fit your life into spaces designed by people who don’t understand what you need, and build a place of your own. Whether it’s your dream house or a weekend cabin, at least once in your life design and build a home of your own.

Who comes up with this stuff? Okay, adopt a pet, check, do something for others check, drive cross country doable, get a broken heart, happens to everybody, so that 's pretty much of a given.

Start your own business. And if you never have the start up capital, I'm now supposed to feel bad the rest of my life because I never did? Same with buying and designing a house. Live in a foreign country, it'd be nice if I could find a job and so I could afford to live there!

When will these people start living in the real world? I've noticed there's never a writer's name attached to any of this so called advice either.

Every picture has a woman in it.  I know the war on men is nearing conclusion but has anyone though about how offensive it is to see the media painting a picture of the woman in the power suit and the bumbling idiot man in a "wife beater" T-shirt with stains down the front.

Is this what women want men to become?  I'm sick of this gender war.  When will it end?

I don't think any of the suggestions were useful.  I was hoping to find something my wife and I could do together.  No luck.

I've done almost all of these things, and they were out of necessity more than frivolity.  I haven't driven from coast to coast (in the US), nor have I puchased what most people would consider to be a house.  Leaps of faith are silly in the religious sense, but taking a risk from time to time and recognizing good luck are really important steps in any endeavor.

I wish people would stop using that stupid phrase "bucket list".  It sounds so ridiculous, especially when people have no idea what it is, why you refer to it as a "bucket list" or any knowledge whatsoever of the stupid move that used that phrase.  Can't you come up with your own title, like "things to do before you die"?   How difficult is that?

"why does there even half to be a bucket list anyway??? it's kind of like saying i did nothing with my life and now i have to make up for it.

well i'm not doing comedy because it's on my bucket list, i'm doing it because it's one job an illegal alien cannot take away from me."

Since I couldn't post on the stupid MSN article about the  'IRS had their wrist slapped about the Star Trek parody' , what the puck is 'riffing off'? I wonder how many 'contributors' to MSN are journalism college dropouts. Of course then I just feel like saying, 'Who gives a puck!'

Yikes, I have done 20 of the 20.  The only thing I didn't do was become financially rich.  And I would have if I hadn't tried to help out so many others who seemed to be in more need that I.  (*_*)???
I turned 65 this month, does that mean the only thing I have left to do is kick the bucket!!!        (Don't worry I think I have one in the laundry room)  (-_-)

This advice belongs in the "everybody has one and it usually stinks" category.
These are to me extremely shallow and self centered interests that only serve to
massage ones fragile ego. When will the "dummying down" stop? So much of life
is a result of .chance and circumstance, just  like the universe itself. I stand in awe
of the amazing miracle of our existence and would need more substance than these
pointless endeavors.

Okay, I've done a lot of these things already. I am 57 years young. I refuse to do something that scares me. That is one of the things I would never do. Life is beautiful and there is no room for scaring myself. It's a great list, because I have done many of these already. I guess my bucket list will have to be something other than your suggestions. Great list of things, though!
