Laundry Tip: Zip Your Zippers, but Unbutton Your Buttons

By Real Simple Magazine Sep 19, 2012 2:37PM

Before you toss your clothing in the washing machine (or even before you put it in the hamper) take a second to zip up the zippers on your clothing. By doing so you’ll prevent the metal teeth from catching on any delicate or woven garments and causing snags.

However, you should unbutton any buttons on your garments (especially on button down shirts) before washing because leaving them buttoned can stress the threads, which means you’ll be replacing those buttons sooner than you’d like.

Get more advice for keeping your clothing in tip-top shape, with our gallery of 20 Tips to Make Your Wardrobe Last.
