The 2012 Kitchen of the Year with Designer Mick De Giulio

In this 100-square-foot space, De Giulio (who likens the room to a "jewel box") selected glass fronts for the upper cabinets and lined the interiors with a mirror finish. "It makes the space feel more open," he says. The cove ceiling has a Venetian finish and gilded iron lights.
KraftMaid Sedona Maple in Dove White cabinetry. Glidden paint. Circa Lighting Apollo flush mount ceiling fixture in Gilded Iron. Grothouse Lumber walnut wood countertops.
"Every great kitchen has a hook, that one unique element that just pulls you in," says De Giulio. In this kitchen, it comes in the form of an unexpected pop of color: a navy sink designed by Jonathan Adler.
Ann Sacks Davlin tile in white goldleaf. Kohler Iron/Tones kitchen sink in Annapolis Navy and Purist single-hole faucet in Vibrant Polished Nickel. Grothouse Lumber cutting board sink insert.
"Chefs always ask for an induction cooktop, not gas, so that's what we put in," says De Giulio. The wall of appliances, trimmed in stainless steel, appears to float in the space.
Hickory Chair Madigan backless counter stool. Shaw Floors SW183 Gold Rush Walnut floor in 940 Klondike Walnut. Kallista Multiere 45" stainless-steel single basin sink. Whirlpool side-by-side refrigerator and combination microwave wall oven with convection cooking.
De Giulio freely mixed materials, including polished stainless steel, glass, and natural wood. The glass-and-nickel cabinet knobs are refined but also "have a little glitter" to them.
Michael Aram New Molten serving bowls. Montana glass canisters from the Container Store.
The De Giulio-designed Metal Boy creates a sculpture out of pots and pans. The cabinet is fashionable but functional - no more digging around in a drawer for an errant lid.
Envisioning earthy elegance, De Giulio placed mix-and-match chairs around a rustic wood table.
Frontgate Monterey lounge chairs and Venetian dining side chairs. Ralph Lauren modular ring chandelier in Aged Iron from Circa Lighting. Michael Aram Sona vessel and New Molten large platter with cutting mat. Kravet custom oak table.
A Livable Space
"Kitchens are the room where families spend the most time," says De Giulio. A fireplace, television, and plush chairs make the space a cozy gathering spot.
Napoleon LHD50 50" linear direct vent gas fireplace. Ann Sacks Palladium Noir tiles. Kravet Libretto side chairs.
De Giulio used "super strong" paving blocks to create the terrace. The island is topped with bluestone, while the base is clad in reflective stainless steel to create a lighter look.
