The 2012 Kitchen of the Year with Designer Mick De Giulio

Simple yet elegant, this year's 1,000-square-foot dream kitchen, showcased in New York's Rockefeller Center, serves up glittering tile, glass knobs, a bold sink, and a jaw-dropping butler's pantry. Take a tour of the space.

"Kitchens can get very complicated," says De Giulio. "I wanted to keep this simple and classic. It's also a little bit glamorous."

Take a tour of the space.

In this 100-square-foot space, De Giulio (who likens the room to a "jewel box") selected glass fronts for the upper cabinets and lined the interiors with a mirror finish. "It makes the space feel more open," he says. The cove ceiling has a Venetian finish and gilded iron lights.

"Every great kitchen has a hook, that one unique element that just pulls you in," says De Giulio. In this kitchen, it comes in the form of an unexpected pop of color: a navy sink designed by Jonathan Adler.

"Chefs always ask for an induction cooktop, not gas, so that's what we put in," says De Giulio. The wall of appliances, trimmed in stainless steel, appears to float in the space.

De Giulio freely mixed materials, including polished stainless steel, glass, and natural wood. The glass-and-nickel cabinet knobs are refined but also "have a little glitter" to them.

The De Giulio-designed Metal Boy creates a sculpture out of pots and pans. The cabinet is fashionable but functional - no more digging around in a drawer for an errant lid.

Envisioning earthy elegance, De Giulio placed mix-and-match chairs around a rustic wood table.

"Kitchens are the room where families spend the most time," says De Giulio. A fireplace, television, and plush chairs make the space a cozy gathering spot.

De Giulio used "super strong" paving blocks to create the terrace. The island is topped with bluestone, while the base is clad in reflective stainless steel to create a lighter look.

Seriously?  A 1000 sq ft kitchen?  How about a kitchen size of 90% of homes in the US.  Unless of course your kitchen is equal to 1/2 to 1/3 the size of a average home ?

As an Interior Designer I wish these Magazines/ Shows etc. would stop misleading people.  This is not a simple kitchen.  ANd I agree with comments below, you would have to have a cleaning lady to keep all of the glass and polished metal and open shelves clean.  It is what it is, a show kitchen.  It shows what you can do and trends etc.  Not a practical design for anyone.  I do love the butlers pantry myself!

I agree.  Years ago when my dad remodeled the kitchen, he left the doors off the cabinets.  I HATED it and thought it looked like hell.

Nice look but not practical. Does someone come with the kitchen to keep everything spotless? I don't have the time or the inclination to polish everything so that it always sparkles.

Not my style . . . I don't really care for it.  Also, I have nice dishes, glasses, dinnerware but who wants to leave it open on shelving?  For all the dust and dirt and God knows what might land on it.

What B.S.  If I wanted to see all my dinnerware and cookware, I would go back to the 60's when it was first introdued (and not warmly accepted).  Yawn-inspiring!

Looks nice -- unless you want to cook in it.  Utterly and totally impractical.

As kitchens go, I hate this one. True there are some areas which are ok but ..the best? Far from it.

And i also agree with all the persons who state that it will be too hard to keep clean as this pic show.

Is he right that chefs always want induction?

I've always thought it would be nice to have a 2-burner induction along with a gas cooktop but I don' t know that I'd want all induction.

I seriously doubt the designer has ever cooked anything of substance in his life, or had to clean up after it.  Boiling water in this kitchen would require at least a hour of clean up!

It's beautiful and nice to look at from a distance.  I prefer a country kitchen to this one.  This one would be hard to keep clean and spotless.
