Taxidermy? In my culture, when the men hunt deer or elk, they pray to it, then we use every piece of it, sometimes the head and antlers are placed on the wall with offerings, say a turqoise necklace is placed around the neck with prayer feathers. By the way, I'm Hopi... Seems to me, these things are little pet peeves random people have...

Anyone try to watch a TV set that high without getting neck strain after a few minutes?  Really, I wonder if architects/decorators ever try out stuff before foisting them on their clients as the "latest" trend.

If you care how your home looks then CONSISTENCY is key.  If you go with the same overall concept throughout your space it will flow nicely and come together.  I'm not saying everything the same but just create a nice "flow".    I think the one mistake people make most is going for very different looks in different rooms (or they don't pay attention at all) and end up with paints/wallpapers/furniture that don't RELATE to one another.  I say if you like "shabby chic" go for it!  But do it throughout the whole house.  Can't resist a modern look in your kitchen? - then try to stick with more modern elements in your other rooms also.  If you like both modern AND country you can always have a more modern background with colors/furniture, and then add in a few rustic and textured items/fabrics  to "warm it up" too.  But again it's CONSISTENCY that will give you a peaceful state of mind in your home.  just my 2 cents!  PEACE!! It must depend where you live. Iam a Realtor and property Mgr. People here LOOK for SS kitchen appliances when they buy. Renter's still fall in love when they come accross them in rental's. I have never seen or heard of anyone here making a wood tabled kitchen and adding a fireplace, and I doubt I ever will.

It's just unbelievable to see how picky people are.  If it's outdated, they want to tear up all that hard work someone put in.  This is all about these young spoiled bratty couples that don't appreciate what they have or character.  These buying and selling shows just end up making me mad because of a couple of opinionated picky brats that want to tear out everything that is perfectly good.  These people are too lazy to keep anything in good condition.  BRING BACK COUNTRY DECOR!!

i hate stainless steel.....i don't like most granite...never have, probably never will....and no matter how pretty it looks in a photo spread, if i were to put a distressed, flaking-paint table in my house, it would simply look like a piece of trash i'd picked up off someone's curb......my house isn't lit by the folks at House Beautiful.....

Decor is very specific to each person's home. It's what they feel comfortable with in their personal space.  I'm an interior designer and I found this article useless.  It was like saying if you have any of these things in your home you are out of touch.  Nothing could be further from the truth.

When people hire me they are usually just looking for a welcome change and want ideas and what direction to go.  I don't force my design style on them rather I take into consideration their lifestyles.  I just want them to feel happy and comfortable in their home.  If that means creating an open concept design with stainless steel appliances and distressed furniture so be it.

This is the most ludicrous article...dare I even call it an article?...lame excuse of the later and waste of valuable media space.  What...no more newsworty headlines to highlight?  To the contributors of this article...please get off of your high, anti-expressionary horse and return to the arrogant rock you crawled out from.  Seriously...MSN and HouseBeautiful should be embarrassed...just like I am for wasting precious time reading this and posting to!  Praying for your literary enlightenment in 2013! God help us all!

Amazing, one man's ceiling is another man's floor.  This is like saying the color blue is bad and don't use white and black together.   Don't come into my house, it's what I want it to be and if you don't like it, too bad.

I'm getting sick of crown molding, hardwood floors, granite counter tops and on and on---  Most of the people requesting these don't even look at the rest of the house.  I have lived in my house for 42 years.  Set it up the best way I could and there it is.  My house! no other like it.

In the '70s it was all about the wood paneling, the shag carpeting, and the popcorn ceilings.  Tastes change.  I remember when a sunken living room was the height of luxury.  Today's decor consists of a feature wall and two dozen pillows on every bed and couch.  Home buyers need to think in terms of what they like--not what the decorator thinks is trendy.  And what happens to all those pillows when it's time to sleep?

I've seen taxidrmy that looked great in cabins, ranches and some very upscale dens.  The bass you caught last summer on your living room wall.....not so much.

I've never been concerned with trends we had yellow or harvest gold whichever you  choose to call them in our kitchen from the mid 70s until last summer when the fridge died then we replaced all of the kitchen appliances with white. I just hope that these new appliances last as long as the old ones di, but I'm sure they'll never last 39 years like the old ones did.

You guys at MSN need to join the rest of us in the real world and stop writing these BS articles. Please tell us something useful.

If these people don't like how I decorate my house they can take a flying leap off any cliff that they want. I don't care what they think because my wife and I are what I care about, and it is who I will make happy, no one else!!! If a bowl of green apples, taxidermy or anything else makes me comfortable I will do it . You don't like it, frankly I don't give a dam#.

I like some of these and others I don't.   What difference does it make?   Do your thing, find your style.  Your the one who has to live with it.  The only thing I will advise you to do is buy quality.   Quality never goes out of style.

If you want peace and quiet, don't go for an open-concept house.  How can the husband enjoy his movie when the wife is making salsa with her loud food processor a few feet away?
I LOVE stainless steel as a work surface for getting some serious work done.  Have to peel and chop 100 pounds of carrots and potatoes for a big event?  Stainless steel countertops with a seamless sink are perfect.  You can disinfect them!  You can see if there's any gunk that needs to be scrubbed away!  However, I RARELY chop carrots against the outside of the stove or refrigerator, so it seems like a waste of perfectly good steel to cover those appliances.  It's like using linoleum on the ceiling or laminating your teddy bear.
Bowls of fruit are fine if you're allowed to eat them.  My aunt buys beautiful fruit to waste in a bowl, and woe to you if you ask to eat any of it.
Many people associate the newest trends with success in life, so they demand these things without really thinking about it, and without factoring in how much they'll have to dust it, or how it will look once they start bringing home even newer things.  Don't want to have a "dated" kitchen?  Don't buy the newest trend.

Ummmmm huh? What a dumb article. Sounds like someone with a big a$s list of pet peeves. I don't think stainless steel appliances are just "in" right now and should go away; they are functional and good quality. Maybe not everyone likes a white/black stove or refrigerator. And if you like neon, go for it.  And sometimes the only place for a TV may be over a fireplace, or maybe having a chalkboard wall is just convenient with the kids in the house. Why does everything have to be about whats in style right now? How about we just use things that are functional, good quality and appeal to our personal sense of style.

I do agree about the stainless only because really it IS very difficult to keep clean!  Next time around I will NOT do stainless!  Otherwise, basically, in this day and age there is no ONE THING that has to work for everyone or one style (or trend) everyone will like.   Go with your instincts - if you like it, it should work for you...the great thing is how many decorating choices we have now - and in all price ranges too.    It's like fashion - there are no "rules"  any more -- it's all about what works for YOU!!  : )
