Celebrate Single Parent Day

More than 13.7 million single parents in the United States are raising 21.8 million children (or more than one-quarter of children under 21 in the U.S. today).

Are you a single mom or dad? Today — Single Parent Day — is all about you, and we’re here to give thanks and high-fives. The bottom line is that parenting is hard enough when you're coupled, so we congratulate the parents who divide parenting duties, collaborate to create stable households or fly solo. You rock!

We're also here to share some facts on what the single-parent profile looks like in the United States.

Did you know ...

  • 84 percent of custodial parents are mothers; 16 percent are fathers.
  • 79.5 percent of single mothers are employed; 90 percent of single fathers are employed.
  • 49.8 percent of single mothers work full time, year round; 71.7 percent of single fathers work full time, year round.
  • 27 percent of single mothers and their children live in poverty; 12.9 percent of single fathers and their children live in poverty.
  • 39.1 percent of single mothers are 40 years old or older.
  • 46 percent have two or more children living with them.
  •  Less than 25 percent of custodial single mothers receive public assistance.

Note: We’re talking about custodial single parents in these statistics.
