Parents Upset Over Lunchtime Palm Scanner

$300,000 system leads to privacy concerns.

Parents of students at Carroll County schools in Baltimore say a new policy that scans kids’ palms to pay for their lunches goes too far.

The Herald talked to Mike Richmond, who has two children at a Westminster elementary school. He said the scanning started before parents were given the chance to opt out.

"I didn’t appreciate how they handled it. I’m concerned about it. I know it’s the way of the future, but it’s fingerprinting, it’s palm-printing."

The district said the goal is to decrease the time it takes to pay for lunches since the children have a limited amount of time to eat their meals.

The controversial system is operating in three Carroll County elementary schools with plans to expand to the whole district within a year. It’s also used in many other schools around the country where there have also been concerns about invasion of privacy as well as the cost of the system. Once implemented, PalmSecure will run the Carroll County district about $300,000.

This is what I do not like about this technology:

Everything ever made has been able to be forged. Perhaps not right now, but with the way technology is going, someday someone will be able to forge someone else’s palm print and use their identity. Innocent people will be framed and convicted of things they did not do.

I know a lot of you will say I am overreacting, but look at how fast technology advances. I see this being a problem in the future. Body parts should not be a way of identifying someone for them to buy the necessities of life.

I am tired of hearing how schools are short of supplies and do not have money to invest in our education, but yet they can spend $300,000 on this. These people should be fired!!! Our school each child has there own lunch # to enter and it follows them through schol till they graduate.I would refuse to do this and speak with an attorney about privacy invasion I am sure there is an attorney somewhere who would do this for free to protect our privacy rights for our children
