Dead Space 2 takes gamers through a horrifically scary battle for their lives in an alien-infested world. Players must fight scary aliens to stay alive and battle the Necromorph abominations using updated weapons and tools to defeat them. In the gaming environment referred to as “The Sprawl,” players must avoid or kill the enemies that are manifested as “horrific corpselike creatures.”

Bing: Video games and violence

The name alone should be enough to keep you away. Mortal Kombat is a wildly popular franchise in the violent video game category that includes the most realistic and gory graphics that go way beyond what you’d expect. The latest version of the game features enhanced graphics, multiplayer functionality (for tag-team “kombat”) and violent killing sprees.

Based on a real, ongoing war, this game hits close to home for many families and is much too violent for children. Hyper-realistic graphics recreate modern day war zones in Afghanistan, soldiers' bodies crumple authentically and gush blood when shot, kill counts are often high enough to populate a small town, not to mention the rampant profanity.

Bing: First person shooter games

Set during the Cold War in the late 1960s, Call of Duty: Black Ops has players engaging in extraordinarily realistic military operations in countries including Vietnam, the U.S.S.R., and Hong Kong. Its urban and rural firefights are among the most frenetic and intense ever created for a video game. Realistic "ragdoll" physics govern the way bodies flail and fall when struck, and blood often soaks soldiers' clothes and the ground. Plus, the series' online play has proven exceptionally habit-forming, luring players into long, late-night sessions.

Video: Are expensive toys the way to go?

This post-apocalyptic cross between a role-playing game and a first-person shooter is all about freedom of choice. Not only can players decide how they want to interact with non-player characters, selecting dialogue options that may be rude or result in sexually suggestive conversations, they also choose which part of their enemies' bodies they want to shoot in slow motion, potentially wounding or blowing off specific limbs. Clearly, this game's bleak world and dark narrative filled with opportunistic nuclear holocaust gangs is designed for mature players.

"Castlevania: Lords of Shadow"

Previous Slide Castlevania: Lords of Shadow Next Slide

Appropriate for: 18 and older

ESRB Rating: Mature

Platforms: Xbox 360, PlayStation 3

Far from the simplistic side-scrolling Castlevania games that parents grew up with, the latest entry in this decades-old franchise is set in a highly believable 3-D world and delivers sometimes shocking levels of blood and gore. The game's hero, a member of a brotherhood of holy warriors, wields a crucifix-shaped whip handle that contains a long length of chain blessed with Holy water which he uses to lacerate enemies, creating fountains of blood in the process. Players will also see topless female fantasy creatures, such as fairies.

Previous Slide Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood Next Slide

Appropriate for: 18 and older

ESRB Rating: Mature

Platforms: Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Windows PCs (Available November 16th, 2010)

Not only do players take on the role of a killer for hire in this 15th-century tale set in a remarkably true-to-life Rome, they have the ability to recruit non-player characters for a fraternity of assassins. Lifelike sword fights see players slashing and skewering foes with realistic crimson effects. Special moves, such as throwing an axe at an enemy's head, have equally bloody results. The extreme nature of the violence combined with mature themes and dialogue make this an adults-only experience.

"Dead Rising 2"

Previous Slide Dead Rising 2 Next Slide

Appropriate for: 18 and older

ESRB Rating: Mature

Platforms: Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Windows PCs

This zombie-battling game has all of the hallmarks of interactive entertainment for grown-ups. For starters, the violence is wildly over-the-top; a motorbike with chainsaws duct-taped to its handles is just one of the game's scores of imaginative weapons used to dismember the dead. Plus, the streets of the Vegas-like city that players explore are filled with scantily-clad cocktail waitresses, and Playboy ads are in the malls. To top it all off, our hero guzzles booze to restore his health -- then vomits it back up if he drinks too much.

8 of 13 Courtesy of parenting.com

"Halo: Reach"

Previous Slide Halo: Reach Next Slide

Appropriate for: 18 and older

ESRB Rating: Mature

Platforms: Xbox 360

Players' aggression may be directed against aliens, and our heroes may refrain from using coarse language, but there's no getting around the fact that the latest entry in this popular Xbox-exclusive franchise is, like its predecessors, all about glorified violence. The game's extra-terrestrial enemies bleed profusely in shades of blue, purple, and green, and often let out bone-chilling screams. This game is all about finding your favorite weapon and using it to tear holes in your enemies.

9 of 13 Courtesy of parenting.com

"Naughty Bear"

Previous Slide Naughty Bear Next Slide

Appropriate for: 18 and older

ESRB Rating: Teen

Platforms: Xbox 360, PlayStation 3

Don't let its Teen-rating or the fact that it stars nothing but plush teddy bears fool you; Naughty Bear is one of the most violent and disturbing games of the year. It's about a sociopathic bear who spends his time choking his peers with golf clubs, slamming their heads in car doors, and frightening them until they commit suicide. The absence of blood and gore is like removing one letter from a curse word; its meaning is implicit and only superficially censored. This is a game about imaginative murder, plain and simple.

This is a parenting problem, not a video games violence problem. Allowing your kids to play a "Mature" rated game is equivalent to allowing them to sit through an "R" rated adult war movie. Parents should stop trying to please their children and actually parent from time to time.

I am so sick of people saying video games cause you to be violent, i am 19 years old and have been playing video games as long as i can remember and i have not once thought about shooting up a school because i played call of duty. People need to understand that its not the games that make people do these horrific crimes, it has something to do with your mental state. You just cant blame violent video games for something a lunitic did because he was crazy.

The fact that these games are all rated "Mature" should be the key that you shouldn't be letting your kids play them.

Follow the ratings guidelines and don't buy, let your kids buy, games that are not rated for their age group.  For those that are, insist on a demo anyway.  You can usually find a "real play" demo on Youtube for most games these days.

All these games are a minimal 3 years old.

Also this stupidity always comes up...in the 1950 Fredric Wertham, author who protested the purportedly harmful effects of violent imagery in comic books on the development of children. His claims caused the creation of the comics code. A stupid code that required Truth and Justice to always prevail in every issue as to teach kids the diffrence between right and wrong.

Parents just need to be parents...Why must the Government raise your kids.

I love how MSN links to this with a description of "12 killer games that are popular right now" when almost all of these games are 1-3 years old.  A lot of people have moved on from several of these games.  Nice fact checking there MSN.

Out of all the games, I think one had the Teen rating, while the rest were rated Mature. That right there says you shouldn't buy or allow allow your kids to buy/play these games.

I played violent games and watched graphic movies at a very young age, I'm 24 now and have yet to commit a violent act against society. My mom allowed me to play games at pretty much any rating, but warned if I so much as said one foul word that came out of it or did anything that brought her to wonder if I can handle these games I'd be stuck with age-group gaming until I was 18. She made sure to monitor what we played while we played it. We (My brother and I) never struck another child after playing a game, never stole a car, never broke into someone's house, none of that nonsense. Parents do make a difference. Teach your kids right and wrong, fantasy and reality. Rating systems are there for the parents to be wary of. It doesn't mean your kids -can't- play the games or watch the movies, just means you might want to explain to them a little bit more about what's acceptable and what's not.

When i was growing up i played violent video games all the time, i worked for them, and paid out of pocket for them. If your kids don't know right from wrong. It isn't the games fault, its the horrible parents that should be there for the kids. Saying "hey this is wrong don't ever do that". But i guess parents don't spend time with their kids anymore what a shame.

Who is the idiot who wrote this article. First off every single one of these games are RATED M for Mature. This is the equivalent of RATED R movies. Just because it is a video game does not make it "For Kids Only" If you seriously have that belief, then I got a bridge to sell you too. WAKE UP People, in this society the average gamer is like 18-20, it's not little timmy, and johnny play Super Mario Bros on the NES anymore... we grew up and so did our tastes.

If you are stupid enough to no do your research, or even bother to say to yourself... Hmm... Call of Duty: Black Ops? Hmm... I wonder what it's about, or seriously if you think Mortal Kombat, which has been around for close to 20 years is appropriate, or a game with Assassin or Mafia in the title, and say... well I'm sure <insert childs name> will like it... and drop $60 with no question, then you deserve everything that comes with it...

So God help those children because if you seriously need a online article that MORTAL KOMBAT, is not a "kids game" Then you seriously need parental re-education you ****ing moron.

Video games are the new rock and roll.

They will put the devil in you and tell you to kill people! You'll be a slave to Satan!

Really? Can we just stop doing this? What killed 20 kids in Sandy Hook? It wasn't games, it wasn't guns, it wasn't music/movies/comics/porn. It was a psychotic who was willing to kill his own mother in order to gain access to the tools with which he used to pick on the weakest people in our society: children, before offing himself.

It's a tragedy, these kids should be mourned, but it's a sick reality that we can't prevent people from going crazy. in 1927, the Bath School Massacre (and to date the largest school massacre) killed 38 people and wounded 52 others.

Tell me again how video games and comics make people violent. If you look at over all violent crime, and even gun crime, it's gone down over the last decade. Anyone who's telling you that the world is getting worse has an agenda.

The world's gettin' better and I'm happy to be a part of it.

On that note: I'm pretty sure Stalin and Hitler didn't play video games, so what messed them up so bad? We don't care, we are fine accepting that Hitler was a psychotic individual (Stalin too) and that THOSE MEN perpetrated THOSE ACTS. We don't blame shower heads and pesticide for the holocaust, we blame the one person we should: Hitler!

Please, can we please be reasonable and stop grandstanding?

"These are the most violent video games for kids that are most popular right now ..."

That alone shows that this article is biased and misinformed. These are not kids' games! That's like saying "These are the most violent slasher films for kids." Despite video games obviously being popular with children, most gamers nowadays are not children, they're adults. I play many of the games described in this feature and I'm a 31 year old father of a 5 year old. I would never ever, in a million years play any of these games in front of or with my son, at least until he's much older.

I am 47, I love the COD series, it is fantastic gaming!!  Great visuals all that stuff.  Do I go around shooting up schools?  no.  I was raised right by my Mom and Dad.  I know the difference between right or wrong.  They made sure of that.  Lanza's Mommy gave him guns to play with.  Shame on her.

As a child of the 60's I heard back then that violent cartoons such as Looney Tunes were the cause de jour for psychopaths killing sprees.  It simply is NOT the medium but the mental condition of certain individuals!  Cartoons, metal music, video games, comic books...give it up and start looking at the PEOPLE causing the problem!!!

Who conducted this survey? Who researched these games? Where are the scientific numbers that mysteriously link these games to murderous lunatics? Get a grip people. I saw it on the internet it must be true! How about we blame the media for all this violence? I don't know about you but I see more violence in a 2 minute clip on the news than I do in many mature rated video games.

wow... cause you hear it all the time in the news... when a murder has killed someone, the witnesses testify that they heard the murder say.... "FINISH HIM" and throws together some crazy combos on the victim....

Games are just what they are... GAMES. No one is forcing you to play them, and if they are... that's another matter.

1. No one really plays these games anymore, really these games are old, there not big right now, MSN fail.

2. These games are meant for adults not kids, if kids do something bad because of these games, its because there idiot parents let them play.

3. Violent video games do not promote killing, because in fact in most violent video games you are killing the bad guy, just like in movies, and books.

4. As long as there is an erge to kill, that person will kill, violent video game or not.

I have seen crimes committed for video games (theft etc), but I have yet to see a video game infatuate a person or all youth in this nation to take up arms by any means necessary and do as they will.

If anything, many of these games tend to lead many into service of the armed forces.

(If they are unlucky they will see what the front lines are like, see their friends around them die, loose a limb themselves, and return home with ptsd. This added with screaming in their sleep from reflections of that true HELL on a REAL BATTLEFIELD!)

Wow, whoever wrote this sure did make these games sound a lot worse than they actually are. A LOT worse. As most people have already said, violent video games do not make people go on killing sprees: they manage that all by themselves. Not to mention the fact that most of those people are mentally disturbed in some way. I notice that no one has attacked TV/Movies in such detail, not to mention the plethora of music in our society. "Nope, we have to blame alllllll the video games, because they're a scapegoat!"  Looks like we have another video game witch hunt on our hands now!

M for Mature. Its an R rating on the games. They are targeted for adults to play. Adults in the US means 18+. Kids should not play them. It comes down to parenting. If the parent does not understand the rating system on their games, a simple Google search can inform them. These arguments are similar to the 80's when people said heavy metal will make all kids satanic or kill themselves (ie the Judas Priest trial). That argument fell by the way side and I'm sure this will too. Crazy people will go off no matter what. Some catalyst will set them off. The Son of Sam said his dog told him to kill, does that mean that all dog owners are potential serial killers? For every psycho out there, there are thousands of others who play these games and live normal lives. I guess its just easier for people to blame an outside influence rather than take a look at themselves.

Children can be desensitized to violence if exposed to it at an impressionable age. That's why there is a rating system, that's why they have parents. Would you hand your 10 year old a loaded gun, a pornographic magazine, or a bottle of pills? He'll no! Then why would you allow them to play a game that's rated M. Just because everyone else is? Stop blaming society and start parenting. Video games, music, movies, tv and even our government and culture all glorify violence. It's a trend that can only be stopped in the home. We live in a violent world, but games and movies and music don't kill people. People kill people.
I think one of the biggest problems in our society is our obsession with self importance and fame. Everyone wants everyone else to care about what their doing. Everyone wants to be their own reality star. For a few select people out there that may have had a bad childhood, been bullied, abused or neglected. Who may have an undiagnosed mental illness, depression or breakdown, what is the quickest way to fame and relevance. Become a singer, rapper, actor, or CEO? No! They get a gun and do something crazy and before you know it everyone and their brother is talking about them.
Our society has problem but your not going to fix them by banning guns or video games or music. You have to fix it at home and it won't happen overnight.

Much like the other M = not for kids kinda like how R works for movies ya know. Another person said these games are are old, yeah...they're all old games. I've been playing video games probably longer than the holy rolling writer of this article has been alive lol!! Got my NES back in 88 and i've been playing video games ever since. I remember when people blamed Judas Priest and Dungons and Dragons when people committed suicide. Don't blame the music/game/movie/TV show, blame yourself for not being involved in your childrens' lives and keep an eye on what they do. Don't place the blame on some object.

These games are not for kids, but for adults... Parents have a huge responsibility to make wure their kids are not playing these games...

This is a good list if you've been under a rock for about a year. On the other hand, that fact makes the games more dangerous because they are way cheaper now and so more susceptible to be bought by cheap parents who want their whiny kids to stop whining and have no big problem plunking down 15-20 for one of these gems.
