Dead Space 2 takes gamers through a horrifically scary battle for their lives in an alien-infested world. Players must fight scary aliens to stay alive and battle the Necromorph abominations using updated weapons and tools to defeat them. In the gaming environment referred to as “The Sprawl,” players must avoid or kill the enemies that are manifested as “horrific corpselike creatures.”

Bing: Video games and violence

The name alone should be enough to keep you away. Mortal Kombat is a wildly popular franchise in the violent video game category that includes the most realistic and gory graphics that go way beyond what you’d expect. The latest version of the game features enhanced graphics, multiplayer functionality (for tag-team “kombat”) and violent killing sprees.

Based on a real, ongoing war, this game hits close to home for many families and is much too violent for children. Hyper-realistic graphics recreate modern day war zones in Afghanistan, soldiers' bodies crumple authentically and gush blood when shot, kill counts are often high enough to populate a small town, not to mention the rampant profanity.

Bing: First person shooter games

Set during the Cold War in the late 1960s, Call of Duty: Black Ops has players engaging in extraordinarily realistic military operations in countries including Vietnam, the U.S.S.R., and Hong Kong. Its urban and rural firefights are among the most frenetic and intense ever created for a video game. Realistic "ragdoll" physics govern the way bodies flail and fall when struck, and blood often soaks soldiers' clothes and the ground. Plus, the series' online play has proven exceptionally habit-forming, luring players into long, late-night sessions.

Video: Are expensive toys the way to go?

This post-apocalyptic cross between a role-playing game and a first-person shooter is all about freedom of choice. Not only can players decide how they want to interact with non-player characters, selecting dialogue options that may be rude or result in sexually suggestive conversations, they also choose which part of their enemies' bodies they want to shoot in slow motion, potentially wounding or blowing off specific limbs. Clearly, this game's bleak world and dark narrative filled with opportunistic nuclear holocaust gangs is designed for mature players.

"Castlevania: Lords of Shadow"

Previous Slide Castlevania: Lords of Shadow Next Slide

Appropriate for: 18 and older

ESRB Rating: Mature

Platforms: Xbox 360, PlayStation 3

Far from the simplistic side-scrolling Castlevania games that parents grew up with, the latest entry in this decades-old franchise is set in a highly believable 3-D world and delivers sometimes shocking levels of blood and gore. The game's hero, a member of a brotherhood of holy warriors, wields a crucifix-shaped whip handle that contains a long length of chain blessed with Holy water which he uses to lacerate enemies, creating fountains of blood in the process. Players will also see topless female fantasy creatures, such as fairies.

Not only do players take on the role of a killer for hire in this 15th-century tale set in a remarkably true-to-life Rome, they have the ability to recruit non-player characters for a fraternity of assassins. Lifelike sword fights see players slashing and skewering foes with realistic crimson effects. Special moves, such as throwing an axe at an enemy's head, have equally bloody results. The extreme nature of the violence combined with mature themes and dialogue make this an adults-only experience.

"Dead Rising 2"

Previous Slide Dead Rising 2 Next Slide

Appropriate for: 18 and older

ESRB Rating: Mature

Platforms: Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Windows PCs

This zombie-battling game has all of the hallmarks of interactive entertainment for grown-ups. For starters, the violence is wildly over-the-top; a motorbike with chainsaws duct-taped to its handles is just one of the game's scores of imaginative weapons used to dismember the dead. Plus, the streets of the Vegas-like city that players explore are filled with scantily-clad cocktail waitresses, and Playboy ads are in the malls. To top it all off, our hero guzzles booze to restore his health -- then vomits it back up if he drinks too much.

"Halo: Reach"

Previous Slide Halo: Reach Next Slide

Appropriate for: 18 and older

ESRB Rating: Mature

Platforms: Xbox 360

Players' aggression may be directed against aliens, and our heroes may refrain from using coarse language, but there's no getting around the fact that the latest entry in this popular Xbox-exclusive franchise is, like its predecessors, all about glorified violence. The game's extra-terrestrial enemies bleed profusely in shades of blue, purple, and green, and often let out bone-chilling screams. This game is all about finding your favorite weapon and using it to tear holes in your enemies.

9 of 13 Courtesy of parenting.com

"Naughty Bear"

Previous Slide Naughty Bear Next Slide

Appropriate for: 18 and older

ESRB Rating: Teen

Platforms: Xbox 360, PlayStation 3

Don't let its Teen-rating or the fact that it stars nothing but plush teddy bears fool you; Naughty Bear is one of the most violent and disturbing games of the year. It's about a sociopathic bear who spends his time choking his peers with golf clubs, slamming their heads in car doors, and frightening them until they commit suicide. The absence of blood and gore is like removing one letter from a curse word; its meaning is implicit and only superficially censored. This is a game about imaginative murder, plain and simple.

As a school counselor, I totally agree with the need for better parenting. My husband and I remember when they took the old Three Stoogies off the air because it was too violent. If people stopped blaming and did something as a parent to support their children while they are young and impressionable, they would become part of the solution and not part of the problem. If people stopped buying things or accepting games that they deam inappropriate for their children, then they would stop making the games. However, I am afraid that many people are far too busy to notice that video games and TV.'s are WITH our children more than we are. We, myself included, need to make more quality time for our children. There is not a replacement for this. Now...I'm off to play a game with my 14 year old (even though I'd rather be on this computer). Lol!

I call B.S. on this article, it is all about parenting. I played my first Mortal Kombat game in the early 90's. My dad loved to collect guns, so i grew up around them but knew not to get close or play with them. It is all about parenting. My conscious was my parents voices. All these dumb laws about spanking your children is also an issue. I got spanked so many time because i was a harmless trouble maker breaking house windows, tearing up my dolls etc. Parents today are more afraid of their children and it should be the other way around.

im age 20 own or have played most of these games and you know what i do when ever i buy a game i pick it up read the back to see what its about and i look at the rating and why its rated that. Even tho im a single 20 year old adult i still read the ratings, so why is it i do this yet all these "good" parents that are mad becuase their kids are exposedto these games (that are rated M for mature) just pick it up and buy it becuase their 12 year old says they want it?

tho i will give this artical one thing on every one of these games it tell you the age the gamer should be.

Appropriate for: 18 and older

and they say it only Every single one of these games. tho it is said that they have to spell it out for parents that M means adults only .... kinda like on some porn sites its says warning mature content ..... and id say a parent buying a kid a M rated game is like buying the kid a subscription to a M rated website  same kinda common sence is missing there

I'm a 20 year old college student who enjoys playing video games in his free time. I've also played almost all of these games at least once and I can say yes, these are violent games. But the issue here isn't that violent games are a problem in our society, its that there are parents out there who don't actively monitor what their kids play. Most of these games are rated for an audience of 17 and older, and there are reasons for this stated right on the box. The problem is that parents either don't care what their kids are playing or they simply give in to what their kid wants when they go to the store. All it takes is a little research for the parent to know if they want their child participate in watching potentially violent images. Don't get me wrong, I have absolutely nothing against violence in video games. Violence exists everywhere in some form or another, even in the Saturday morning cartoons kids watch. All I'm saying that its the parents responsibility to be, well, responsible parents.

I love Assassin's Creed.  Play it a lot.  I don't have any desire to go out and shoot people in the real world.  My parents taught me right from wrong.  We need to work on strong family values, not regulate what we can do in our play time. Making games (or guns) illegal won't stop the immoral or troubled person from acting out in the wrong way.   By the way I am 62 and a woman and still like to enjoy fantasy games when I have the time.

I wonder what violent video games were played by Charles Whitman, James O. Huberty and Andrew Kehoe?

Don't know who these folks were...crack a book

Mass killings have been around FOREVER.

Blaming video games, movies, culture is just a cop out.

For all you holy rollers, there were only 5 people on the planet before we had our first murder.

Has always been like this.  Will always be like this.

My daughter plays three of these twelve games (and is a second degree blackbelt in Tae Kwon Do).  She has lots of swords and knows how to use them.  But she is very mild-mannered and well-adjusted, and is able to separate reality from fantasy.

Here we go again. Society blaming objects rather than the person themselves. I have been to War and used my weapon against our enemies. I have never once thought of using my weapon toward another civilian that poses no threat toward me. Why? Cause I am a rational individual who knows right from wrong.

lol wow these are all for adult, I guess I could see getting Naughty Bear mixed up if you're retarded but they are all M none of these are for children. Also Halo and Assassin's Creed? For real they arent very violent and they are about fighting for the greater good, a very noble cause. I would've put Manhunt up here or Postal but I guess they have to stay 'trendy' with the videogames these days

You might as well begin a list of movies to avoid and put porn titles on them.  These games aren't intended for children and has an M rating.  Video Game and any other stores that sell them won't sell these games to kids.  But if the parent or guardian is there to make the purchase for them, then that's the problem.  Stop being lazy parents who feel that everyone is responsible for your children.

I just love how the journalist uses the word 'scary' in the first slide. Have this person ever heard of a thesaurus because I know I have. Sounds like what an eight year old would write. By the way there is a reason why games not made for children have the letter 'M' on it.

Lame article. I am 35 and have been a avid video gamer for at least 20 yrs. I have yet to go on a killing spree instigated by playing video games.  If someone is mentally ill then blaming video games makes no sense since one thing has nothing to do with the other. Plus is the author a retard? Everyone of these games are 5 or 6 years old. Nobody is playing THESE games anymore, they are old news.

When I was a kid, all the boys in the neighborhood would play war.  One day it might be cowboys vs. indians,  Next day Americans vs. Germans.  We all had realistic looking toy guns.  Hell, for my gun I used my dad's drill team rifle from his military school days.  A REAL gun, minus the firing pin guts.   We would run thru all our neighbor's yards playing war, "shooting" at each other killing one another.

Today's kids can't do this.  If they were to run around like we did, they would most likely get shot by either a neighbor (who we don't  know anymore) or the cops.

These video games are just this generation's version of playing war.

Halo?  Are you serious?  This game has no business being rated M.   There is no blood.  No gore.  No foul language.  No carnage.  You don't even shoot humans.  You shoot transformer-looking characters who upon being shot turn "electrified" and get right back in the game.

Why video games?  why not rag on Paint Ballers or Laser Tag?

I am 50 years old and own 2 video game related businesses.

first of all these guys in the shootings were of adult age. they know right from wrong, real from fake. they were adults with a plan. the media gives people like this a form and feeling they are famous just from all the coverage they do. if they are going to attack video games then they should also go after hollywood and even local tv broadcasts. lots of movies and tv show are more violent than video games. oh yeah.... wait for it...... stuff like this has happened long before video games were invented. violence, its one of mans natural instinct. why dont we just blame video games for Hitlers actions as well. im sure he was popping some nazi zombies and grand theft autoing on his playbox 360.

Funny that the title on Parenting's website is 10 Violent Video Games to Avoid and there is 12 games.  And good job MSN for reposting and artical that was posted around october 2011.  Maybe someone should of thought about looking to see if these titles are even relevent anymore.  Lastly why would you repost an artical that was blasted the first time by everyone saying that parents should look at the rating on the games before buying and letting there kids play.

Dont try to blame video games for because you are a bad parent. Children should not be playing the games that are Rated M to begin with. Rather than use video games as a babysitter, take time to talk and LISTEN to your children. You could ban games on that list but a chemical imbalance within your children is to blame because of your poor genetics that made them that way.

And they want to ban guns. Yet they let people sit for hours fantasizing about murder. You should have to get a background check to see if you are mentally capable of playing these games and being able to separate fantasy from reality.

When ever anything happens anymore in society the liberal media never puts blame on the individual, it is always the "product of the environment" argument.

So lets blame, Guns, Games, Movies, Sex, Drugs, Rock N' Roll.

At some point you have to say hey, maybe this individual was mentally Ill. Maybe this person has the inability to distinguish right from wrong.

But the liberal answer is always to bring on more government oversight to tell me how to live my life to accommodate 1% of the population.

these are not even recent games. black ops came out 2 years ago, kane and lynch 3, and assassins creed brotherhood now has two sequels, and black ops and reach have one sequel each. i think your list needs to be updated. also, you need to change the title of the article. you dont need to avoid these games, most of them are great, and black ops' story line is movie quality. as a parent, you just need to be smart enough to know that a game that says 17+, means 17+. treat an M rating like an R rating, if that makes it easier to understand. you wouldnt let your 8 year old watch Taxi Driver or Scarface, just like you wouldnt let them play Grand Theft Auto or Mafia 2. these things are not games' fault, simply the fault of people who are ignorant of the rating system, or simply ignore it.

Of all the games that I've seen listed here, I have 20 of them and many more that they haven't  listed. I watched my first horror movie when I was 10 ,Friday The 13th Part 3. I just turned 35 and have played and still play games that continue to make society cringe.
I just recently played all  3 Modern Warfare games back to back. My girlfriend went on a business trip so I made a weekend out of it.
I have a career, friends( not gamer friends either) and a reasonably active social life. It never made sense to me how someone could go out and do the things I've seen in games and movies.
Rational average Joe types like me aren't affected by this or the media's influence trying to make freaks out of all of us who like a little gore and destruction in our digital lives.
Movies and games are entertainment. Parents need to make sure that what they put into their kids won't effect them in a negative way. My mother knew way back when that I was a horror buff and didn't see anything wrong with it because I knew even as a child that this was entertainment. Key word entertainment not something I treated as gospel truth to as how the world really was or that I should become a "killer".
If a parent chooses to let the kids watch movies or play games with adult level material and the kid starts to emulate that then there's a problem. Basically what I'm trying to get at is if it looks like it's going to be an issue stop it in it's tracks. If it doesn't look like a problem let kids be kids and go into little fantasy worlds of slaying dragons and being G.I. Joe.
