Top 10 dog names of the year

We've already examined the most popular puppy names of 2012, but just finding out which names we're most likely to hear at the dog park wasn't quite enough. We wanted to look at which monikers were on the rise, so we dug a little deeper to determine the 10 trendiest names of 2012. To do so, we hit up Vetstreet's data, which includes information about 1.26 million dogs. We looked at where the names were in 2003 and 2012; those that moved up the most made the list. Of course, some names fell off the list completely in the past decade — Elvis, Ozzie and Cassie among them. Some of these were replaced by newer names like Thor and Athena that, despite a late entry to the Top 100, have become popular enough that they, too, were included.

No. 1: Dexter and Luna

Dexter rose in popularity the most of all male dog names, starting at No. 99 in 2003 and landing at No. 25 in 2012.

Luna's rise in popularity was even more meteoric, also beginning at No. 99 in 2003 and rising to No. 19 last year.

No. 2: Thor and Layla

Previous Slide A dog carrying a stick out of the ocean Next Slide

Although Thor didn't even appear on the Most Popular list back in 2003, it climbed to No. 27 in 2012, after making the list for the first time in 2010. Not coincidentally, the movie Thor came out in 2011, and the main character in that movie also starred in last year's top film, The Avengers.

Bing: How to name your dog

Layla, at No. 37, might not have box office stats to compare to Thor, but it’s also risen quickly, cracking the Top 100 in 2004 and hitting No. 37 last year.

No. 3: Gunner and Piper

Previous Slide A herding dog! Next Slide

Gunner first came on our radar in 2004, and ever since then, it’s climbed in popularity, ranking now at No. 28.

Piper, which now holds the No. 42 spot, broke into the Top 100 in 2006 and quickly gained steam.

No. 4: Bentley and Nala

Previous Slide A terrier running in the grass Next Slide

Bentley is a star on the rise, joining the Top 100 in 2002 and hitting No. 7 last year. It’s been one of the Top 10 male dog names for the past three years.

Bing: Great dog names

Nala, a name from one of our favorite animated films, The Lion King, was theNo. 25 most popular name last year, after first making the Top 100 back in 2003.

No. 5: Jax and Stella

Previous Slide A Bernese Mountain Dog laying down Next Slide

At No. 35, Jax isn’t one of the most popular names, but it’s moved up the ranks quickly considering it wasn’t in the Top 100 until 2009. One interesting tidbit: The name Jackson has declined over the past five years, and this is the first time Jax has earned a more popular spot than its longer counterpart.

Video: What's your favorite thing about your pet?

Stella made the Top 100 for the first time back in 2001 and hit No. 22 last year. Could the adorable Frenchie on Modern Family have something to do with the name's rise in popularity?

No. 6: Ace and Willow

Previous Slide A happy Jack Russell Next Slide

Ace first made the Top 100 in 2003. It rose to No. 31 in 2012, perhaps due to the recent trend of owners choosing old-school human nicknames for their pets.

Willow, hitting the Top 100 in 2009, has made quite the impression, rising to No. 59 last year.

No. 7: Leo and Maya

Previous Slide A cute puppy in a bed Next Slide

Leo, the 30th most popular name overall, made the Top 100 list for the first time in 2001 and has been climbing up the chart ever since.

Maya joined the Top 100 list back in 2005, rising to No. 60 by 2012.

No. 8: King and Athena

Previous Slide A boxer puppy Next Slide

Although it may seem like an established and stately name, King, the No. 51 name, didn’t break into the Top 100 until 2006, making it a relative newcomer.

Athena is an even more recent addition to the list of popular names, joining the Top 100 in 2010 and rising sharply over the last couple of years, hitting No. 62 in 2012.

No. 9: Simba and Charlie

Previous Slide A white fluffy puppy in a pile of leaves Next Slide

Simba, currently No. 53, first became popular during the mid-nineties, thanks to The Lion King. It dropped out of the Top 100 in 2001, but came back in 2009, seeing a major surge in popularity over the past few years.

Traditionally a male dog name, Charlie has become a favorite for female dogs, joining the Top 100 in 2010.

No. 10: Milo and Ella

Previous Slide A cute puppy Next Slide

Milo claimed the No. 17 spot in 2012, marking its first entrance into the Top 20.

Ella joined the ranks of the Top 100 in 2006 and has remained a prevalent pick since then, grabbing the No. 64 slot in 2012.

I think it's funny how people choose names for thier dogs.  When I got my first Affenpinscher about 6 years ago, her registered name was in my mind terrible...mostly becuase when I called her by it she did not respond in the least.  So I figured, maybe she wanted to choose her own name.  I came up with a plan, we would let her choose her own name since she was a puppy and we were her first family.  I attempted to call her by every dog name I could think of....when she responded I made note to come back to that name again later.  After about an hour or so, I had the list narrowed down to about three names that seemed to worked for her.  I continued to call her with these names over the next couple of days (along with her registered name) and eventually settled on the one she continously responded to.  My point is that I had never done this before, but she excelled in obience, trick training, and is the most loving of all my animals...was it the name?  Or just the early respect we allowed her as part of our pack that made the difference?  Probably a bit of both...just remember when choosing a new name for your beloved four-legged friend, you may want to give them a little imput as well.

I have a handsome black cocker who is very affectionate.  His name is Rudolph Valentino, Rudy for nickname.  Also have a black and tan cocker that is very athletic, handsome and is always pirating underwear, socks, bra's and hiding them as his "treasures."  He is aptly named   Captain "Jack" Sparrow.  What a handsome rascal he is!

I guess people name their dogs like they name their kids, with the trendiest names.  Which explains whey there are so many Emmas and Aidens out there with dogs named Bentley and Bella.  Please...make it stop.

I quite like the idea of a dog with the same name as a serial killer, but I like my two mutts' names best:

Spot and Rover.  Not kidding.

We adopted a 50/50 mix between a poodle and a bichon frise about 6-1/2 years ago and his 'ironic' name continues to fit.  He is about as white as they come but we named him according to his behavior more than his looks.  We named him 'Shadow' because he has the sometimes 'irritating' habit of shadowing and being constantly under foot.  Whenever we take him places like to the pet store or vet and people ask us what his name is, we always get the eyebrow raise and comments like, "Do you know what color a shadow is supposed to be?" or "why in the world would you give him such a contradicting name?"  A few times I've answered, "would you like to care for him for a day and see what we mean?"

When I got my puppy I needed supplies, I haven't had a dog in many years. At Wal-Mart there was only pink collars and stuff left over. I thought to myself I didn't want a sissy dog and the name Cisco popped into my head. It stuck and it fits, everyone thinks it suits him. I don't like trendy names, use your heart and choose.

We have a Female German Shepard named Lola and a Little Snouser/Maltese cross named Tic-Tic. Tic-Tic was 5 when we got Lola as a pup and established dominance. It is so funny to see a huge shepard cower to that little sh!t.

Tic-Tic looks just like the dog in #4.

I named my little Chihuahua puppy Peanut.  Then I thought I should have named her for my late mother, but by then Peanut knew her name.  So, I added "Anne" and she became Peanut Anne.  Everyone just loved the name.  I lost Peanut Anne a year ago and now have a cat named Peekaboo Anne.

I have two Bichon Frise's.  The 7 yr old is purebred Princess Diana SurgarBear!  Known as SurgarBear or Shug!     The 5 year old is also purebred named Miss Minnie Pearl, and goes by Missy and Miss!   They are wonderful pets.  No shedding!  All white with the black nose and eyes pretty much like all Bichon's.  Not too small & not too big!  I love them to pieces!!

I adopted a skruffy looking 4 1/2 month Snauzer mix.  She looked at first to be terrier mix so I went to the Irish girl names and came up with "Oonaugh".  Now I'm told she could be part German.
