10 most popular kitten names

Naming your new cat is a difficult and important decision — after all, he'll have to live with that moniker for the rest of his life, and so will you. But naming a kitten can also be tons of fun! We culled our records and came up with the a curent list of the 10 most popular cat names. It's no surprise that human names like Chloe and Charlie are trending right now, but we also found that old classics like Kitty and Tiger are still hanging in there. And we bet you can guess which box-office smash hit is behind the number-one name for female kittens. (Hint: It's about vampires.) Although we're holding out for a kitten named Katniss (after the heroine of The Hunger Games, of course) — but Catniss might be more appropriate.

#1 Female name: Bella

It should come as no surprise that the number-one female cat name has Twilight mania to thank for its popularity. And it's not just animals who have been influenced by Bella Swan's lady vampire -- Bella is also one of the top names for human baby girls. With the final Twilight installation coming out this month, we're sure many kittens will be sporting tags engraved with this name.

This name may be simple to spell and say, but it's perfect for your regal and adventurous kitten. And if your tiny cat is truly a wild thing, it accurately brings to mind the title character in Maurice Sendak's classic Where the Wild Things Are.

#2 Female name: Lucy

This iconic human name -- think Charlie Brown's Lucy and the much-loved I Love Lucy -- has finally worked its way into the animal world.

#2 Male name: Oliver

Previous Slide "10 most popular kittchen names" \\ Kittens Next Slide

Disney's 1988 animated film Oliver & Company stars a tiny orange kitten named (what else?) Oliver, who joins a gang of streetwise canines in New York City. Who knows if cat owners are still watching this movie. But if you aren't, we recommend it!

Just in case you forget which species of animal you share your home with, the name Kitty will be right there to remind you.

#3 Male name: Charlie

We'd like to think that this moniker owes its popularity to the hilarious YouTube video "Charlie Bit My Finger," but it's impossible to say for sure!

#4 Female name: Chloe

We're warning you now: If you name your cat Chloe, she may demand holiday gifts from her namesake, the luxurious fashion line.

#4 Male name: Tiger

This ferocious name may conjure images of a much larger animal than your tiny ball of fluff, but at least it stays true to its cat family roots!

#5 Female name: Sophie

Previous Slide "10 most popular kittchen names" \\ Multi-color cat Next Slide

Gone are the days when we named pets Spot and Fluffy. Now we give our furry babies names traditionally reserved for human babies, like Sophie. (Or even Sophia, if Sophie is just your pet's nickname.)

#5 Male name: Smokey

Is there a cuter name for a gray cat than the classic Smokey? We didn't think so.

My last roommate had two male cats. Named Ali and Braveheart, I thought they were pretty lame names so I gave them my own names. The grey one was named Chauncy, sometimes I like to call hm Brutus cuz he was a big heavy kitty. All grey in color too. And the calico and white one I named Mr. Wiggins. No idea why i named him that, he just looked like a Mr. Wiggins.

I love my cat's name. She's a female tiger kitty with white paws. We named her Ziggy and it's as charming as she is elegant. I love her so much. She's my special kitty!

My baby is a big ol' jet-black boy named Niko (full name is Niklaren Goldeye from a book). Before him, we had another black kitty (who ran away when being cat-sit by my sister) whom we got as a kitten and named Mimi until the vet told us she was a he.  Mimi became Meems, which was already the nickname "she" had started to pick up.
My sister's cat is Princess Irene, and she is a holy little terror.  She certainly thinks she is a princess and will perch on your lap like one...until she decides to use your hand as a chewtoy.
My grandma had a cat named Rachmaninoff - Rocky for short (yes, she was a pianist).  He loved her to pieces, but the minute anyone else tried to come near him he'd run and hide and hiss.  Sadly this meant that none of us could take him when we moved her into a nursing home.
My other grandma's cats were Max and Mandy (twins), and our kitty growing up was a beautiful longhaired tortoiseshell named Tigris, although we hardly called her anything but "Kitty".

Tyson - he liked to chew on earlobes as a kitten so named after Mike Tyson siamese mix.

Ebony - found as a lost baby all black but a teeny white spot on her belly.

Sprocket - reject of the litter as he had a tale siamese mix.

Rugby - he is named after the game and the striped shirt style he is gray with big striped bands.

We got him for a companion for Sprocket after Tyson passed away.

We totally enjoy the personalities of each cat.  They are like dogs, playing fetch, wanting to taste what you are eating, running to the door if someone knocks.

I had to say goodbye to my tux cat that I named after a fictional detective, Lord Peter Whimsy, Whimsy for short. He was about 18 years old at the time.

The cat before Whimsy was named Michael Phurbul Caruthers MPC for short. When MCP was 5 years old, I was listening to the radio and the DJ came on and said, "This is Michael Caruthers sitting in for...." Never thought I was naming MPC after this DJ. MPC lived to be 15 years old and was a red tabby, a big 20 pound red tabby.

Finally, my very first cat was named David after Davy Jones of the Monkeys. I wanted to be Davy Jones little sister, not that I really thought it would happen but I was a kid then. He was also named David because it means "Beloved one" and I did love him. David was the only cat I had that wasn't fixed, my dad thought it was a waste of money because male cats don't have kittens. Don't know how long he lived as he was the only outside cat I've ever had.

Other cats that were part of my life, but were my sister's, were Minabird Monster Macy, Tivitat, Samantha MOA (Sam Sam for short and MOA stands for Mother Of All), Snookums, Peggy Sue, Dolly, Snowball (she was deaf), and Footy Toes (He had the build of a Siamese but was a tan and grey tabby with white front toes and white back feet, thus the name.)

My current cat is named Ms. Nibbles because she nibbles on your hand when you pet her. (I couldn't really call her 'Ms. Bites-a-lot.") My previous cat, as a kitten, liked to climb up on my shoulder to nap. One day he was climbing up my shirt when he hooked my nipple with his sharp kitten claw. OUCH! From that day on, he was Mr. Prickles. My cat before him was named Stretchy, because he loved to stretch.

Stretch was the smartest cat I ever had. He figured out how to drink daintily from a partially filled glass by dipping his paw to the bottom and then licking the paw off. He also figured out how to open the bathroom door, when once he was accidentally locked within. As another example, at one time I started hiding the food dish before I let the cats in for dinner, just to mix up their routine. The one cat, Scooter (I didn't name him) , would go stand next to where the food dish used to be and simply cry. Stretch strolled through the house, looking this way and that, until he spotted the food dish and than went over and chowed down. Scooter was dumb as a dog, but Stretchy was a very smart cat.  =^..^=

My cat's name is Stinky Booty. Not the reason you would think.  I rescued her at 4 weeks and her tail was broken and her throat was cut and had bugs living in it and it smelled awful. So...in short when I used hold her to bottle feed her she was a little smelly until the wound healed. So I used to say to her..."You're just a stinky little booty arent you?" and the name stuck. lol

The kids named one 'Miss-hell,' because it was so unruly and did not like to be touched.  Also because a family friend was named Michele, and, well, it just fit.

The only things we humans were good for was, making sure the food dish was full, and opening the door.  Cat would not eat from his bowl if he could see the bottom!

Well, the vet told us Miss-hell needed neutering, so we changed the name to 'Mr. Miss-hell.'  Unfortunately, the cat's demeanor did not change with the proceedure and name change......

Belle (after Beauty and the Beast), Chucky-buddy (kids named him LOL)  and Go-Go (7 year old named her).  All three have the personalities to go with the names, Belle loves to be brushed and have her nails done on a weekly basis (even if there is nothing to trim).

Chucky-Buddy will follow you around (16 pounds of huge black cat) he's our security panther.

And Go-Go, never stops running around and playing.  Love our cats!
