Number of fat cats soars
Dogs aren’t the only ones fighting obesity.
A new study finds the number of overweight cats is at an all-time high.
Conducted by the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention, the National Pet Obesity Awareness Day Survey found that 58 percent of cats were reported to be overweight or obese by their veterinarians. That’s up 5 percent from the group’s 2010 survey.

The research also found that 53 percent of dogs are overweight or obese.
“Pet obesity remains the leading health threat to our nation’s pets,” said the association's founder, Dr. Ernie Ward. “We continue to see an escalation in the number of overweight cats and an explosion in the number of Type 2 diabetes cases.”
Now about 80 million cats and dogs in the United States are at increased risk for weight-related disorders such as diabetes and many cancers, according to the study.
Experts say that one of the biggest issues in fighting pet obesity is that many times owners do not recognize their dog or cat is overweight.

Feed your cat/dog raw meat...I grind turkey thighs, chicken legs in a grinder that accepts the soft bones of chickens. Mix it with the freeze dried ingredients that complete the essential nutrients for a cat. You will find at the kits. It is not expensive, the cats love it, never become fat, fur is shiny, smooth as silk...You will never go to a Vet!! In nature, cats do not cook their food(prey) then make it into ridiculous nuggets full of junk, by-products...You know what your cat is eating.I give my cats a little top quality dry food as a treat...because they like it...not a staple diet...
Cats become addicted to the inferior dry food, because they instincltively do not feel "nourished", therefore they overeat themselves to obesity. They need good quality Fats, protein, and a tiny bit of carbs( which is in the stomach of prey they catch when wild...they eat whole bird, with undigested seeds etc..
My cats eat only as much as they need to feel satisfied with 4oz daily of raw diet. I freeze those portions, it is not a chore it is an act of love. Never gained excess weight. A raw diet a day keeps the Vet away!
We have a 20 pound cat that has lost 2 pounds and is on a prescription diet cat food. His food portions are measured each day. The commercial cat food is composed of filler that is probably like human junk food. When he was eating PURINA CAT CHOW he was so blaoted that he could not roll over or climb. Our pets trust us when we feed them and we should be able to trust companies that make our pets food.
I have an overweight 26 lb that never gets enough & the other just picks & was losing weight. we did 2 things.
1) feed only canned food now. it has more protein & cats are carnivores by nature. they don't eat corn. i also carefully figured out how many calories he s/b eating & translated it into the food amt. it was a lot of work but we love him. Even if the calories are the same, he seems more satisfied when he eats the canned food vs dry. After 6 months he's down to under 22 lbs & still losing
2) the 2nd thing & this may not be possible for all. We started feeding the normal picky cat on one of the kitchen counters (i know yuk, but it's not a food section) & on a cabinet upstairs, so he had 2 places to eat all day The fat one can't jump up that high so the food is safe.
Hell, the headline misled me into thinking this would be about Wall Street fat cats.
