Girl gives birthday money to K9

She gifted a local police dog a bulletproof vest

By Vetstreet Oct 1, 2013 7:30PM

Allison Henry via CNNAllison Henry decided she didn’t want toys or clothes for her 10th birthday. Instead, she asked her friends and family to give to a special cause: buying a bulletproof vest for a local police dog. Henry donated nearly $1,000 to an organization called Vested Interest in K9s, which provided the vest to Ryker, a canine officer at the police department in Holyoke, Mass. “I just feel that a dog should be safe, because I really like animals,” she said. The police officers noted that their dogs face the same dangers they do but often don’t have the same protection. Ryker and the police chief thanked Henry in a special ceremony last week, where she met Ryker and was presented with a plaque. — Watch it at CNN

Here parents must be so proud that they are raising a child with a sense of active compassion. It's easy to feel compassion but harder to get involved and stand up for something. May this amazing young girl have a long and blessed life.

She didn't get $1k for her birthday,  her family and friends and I am sure others got together to help her make her dream happen!  The point of the story is, she gave up her birthday whether it was $1 or $1k  and she helped a working dog be better protected!!  Her heart is in the right place!  Better than at least half the people posting here....

7 signs your dog owns you

You might proudly call yourself a dog owner, pet parent or canine guardian, but let’s be real: Your dog owns you. You might be laughing now, but think about it — you've surrendered the best seat on the sofa to him, you plan your entire weekend around his trips to the dog park, and you take him to the groomer more often than you get your own hair cut. And let's not forget who's in every photo on your Facebook and Instagram feeds. Sound familiar? We thought so. But in case you still think you're in charge, here are seven classic signs that your dog is the one calling the shots.

9 unusual dog breeds the vet is seeing more of

One of the best things about being a veterinarian is all the different dogs I get to meet. Of course, I love the Labs and Beagles and Boxers and Poodles, not to mention those crazy Canine Cocktails, or what my parents used to call Heinz 57s. They are among the more popular dogs out there, and I see a lot of them. In fact, it used to be that it was rare to see anything else. Here are nine dog breeds I sometimes see now that I didn’t see in the past.

Many breeds were developed to do work that required them to act independently. Those dogs tend to be smart, but as family pets, they may need more leadership and training than others. Ultimately, though, they’re worth it. Here are 11 dog breeds that tend to have independent personalities.
