Cat map tracks thousands of felines
The new tool takes a cue from field surveys of wild animals.
When you move to a new city, it helps to know where to find others like you.
So, in honor of the arrival of Sumatran tigers Jae Jae and Melati at the London Zoo, the zoo launched an interactive Cat Map, where cat owners around the city can upload pictures, descriptions and locations of their domestic cats.
The tool takes a cue from field surveys of wild animals, and applies it to little cats. You can use the information to find out how many gray cats there are in a certain neighborhood, or how many tabbies are named Tiger, for example.
“Our two new tigers are big cat news, but we think little cats are important, too,” says the map’s creator, Filip Hnizdo of the Zoological Society of London.
Not to worry — it’s not open only to Londoners. Those of us across the pond can make our kitties count on the map, too.
