Many people would probably be quick to say that a baby would be the most likely reason for an unmarried couple to stay together. But according to Harry Benson, of the U.K.’s Marriage Foundation, “research on cohabiting couples show conclusively that getting a pet is a better indicator of staying together than having a baby.”

As reported in the U.K.’s Telegraph, the Marriage Foundation initiated an extensive poll of 3,500 adults to find out what promotes stability in relationships.

“Although having a baby together is seen as a sign of commitment, many relationships where there are children still break down," Deborah Jeff, head of family law at Seddons, said. 

But when pets are in the household first couples have greater odds of lasting longer.
