2012's top puppy names

After examining the names of more than 1.25 million puppies born in 2012 from Vetstreet's records, we came up with the year's top pet names. We couldn’t help but notice that many of the trends from last year have persisted, but there are definitely some new names on the rise. Scroll through our gallery to see the top 10 male and female puppy names.

No. 10 female name: Maggie, male name: Toby

Maggie: This sweet moniker dropped one spot from last year's popular names list, but we're glad it's still hanging in there.

Toby: After falling out of the top 10 last year, the name Toby managed to sneak back onto the list. It had been in the top 10 every year between 2001 and 2010.

No. 9 female name: Coco, male name: Jack

Previous Slide A person holding a handful of puppies Next Slide

Coco: Has this name's popularity spiked because of the dog-obsessed Coco in the E! reality series Ice Loves Coco? We're not completely sure, but we like to think so.

Jack: It's always been our dream to own two dogs named Rose and Jack. And bring them on a boat and (safely) recreate the Titanic dance scene. Come on, we know you've thought about it too.

No. 8 female name: Chloe, male name: Duke

Previous Slide Brindle chihuahua puppy Next Slide

Chloe: There's no denying that human names have become much more popular for animals in recent years. Chloe is down three spots in 2012, but we're sure this moniker will remain trendy for years to come.

Duke: Does this have anything to do with the Bush's Baked Beans dog? Who doesn't love those commercials?

No. 7 female name: Sadie, male name: Bentley

Previous Slide A basket of terrier puppies Next Slide

Sadie: This adorable name held on to its lucky No. 7 slot for another year. With a little more luck, it'll move up a spot or two in 2013.

Bentley: Men sure do love their car names, and the luxurious sounding Bentley is no exception.

No. 6 female name: Sophie, male name: Bear

Previous Slide Puppy chewing on grass Next Slide

Sophie: Are these canines prepping for a massive dog adaptation of the musical Mamma Mia? Hey, a girl can dream!

Bear: Naming one species of animal after another species of animal ... it's genius! This classic and clever name moved up one spot from 2011.

No. 5 female name: Lola, male name: Cooper

Previous Slide Two chocolate labs puppies Next Slide

Lola: This cute name made the biggest chart hop of all the monikers on the top 10 list, moving up three spots from last year.

Cooper: A decade ago, Cooper was far from being considered a trendy dog name. But as celebrities like Anderson Cooper and Bradley Cooper gained popularity, so did the name Cooper for pets.

6 of 11 Thinkstock

No. 4 female name: Molly, male name: Rocky

Previous Slide Corgi puppies Next Slide

Molly: This adorable moniker was popularized by the patriotic American Girl doll years ago, but we still love it for our patriotic puppies.

Rocky: If you've got a big breed (like a Mastiff or a Great Dane), this name is perfect for your heavyweight champion. Also, how much fun would it be to have a Boxer named Rocky?

No. 3 female name: Lucy, male name: Charlie

Previous Slide A pile of puppies Next Slide

Lucy: This is everyone's favorite Peanuts character, so it's no surprise that it's popular with the leash-and-collar set. Just make sure your pup doesn't take her name too much to heart and become the dog park bully!

Charlie: Do we detect a trend here? This name is especially funny if you have a brown dog and can call him Charlie Brown. Good grief, of course it's a little cheesy, but it's sure to get you some laughs at the dog park.

8 of 11 Thinkstock

No. 2 female name: Daisy, male name: Buddy

Previous Slide Bulldog puppy Next Slide

Daisy: This stylish name is fashionable year in and year out — especially for people who own both ducks and dogs. Get it?

Buddy: Popularized by the much-loved series of Air Bud films, Buddy is a great moniker for your furry little buddy.

9 of 11 Thinkstock

No. 1 female name: Bella, male name: Max

Previous Slide Yellow lab puppy Next Slide

If you're at the dog park and shout "Max!" or "Bella!" and suddenly you have an entire brigade of excited canines charging at you, don't say we didn't warn you! These names took the top spots again this year — and not only for dogs. Max and Bella are the No. 1 names for kittens too.

Max: We just love the simple and sweet ring of Max for our adorable puppies.

Bella: Since Twilight's Bella sank her teeth into this list a few years back, we can't imagine she'll let go anytime soon!

Well, I've got one of the top 10 names. I have a female Corgi/Cattle Dog mix named Maggie. My other two are Zack (male Jack Russell/Mountain Feist mix) and Tia (German Shepherd/Husky mix). Maggie and Tia are shelter rescues.
